Our rallying cry was simple for decades: Not sold at a store near you.
Red Oxx was built on the stubborn belief that good things take work—by hand, in Montana, one bag (and one story) at a time. If you wanted Red Oxx, you called Billings, spoke to someone who’d stitched or tested your gear, and waited for a box with your name Sharpied on it to arrive at your door.
We’ve always liked it that way. When you build something right, you take pride in every mile it travels.
But here’s the honest truth: if you’re not growing, you’re standing still. And if you’re standing still, you’re just in someone else’s way. This year, the open road—and one trustworthy shop—gave us a chance to expand Red Oxx’s reach without losing what makes us who we are.
Packing Up: Rugged Gear for the Open Road
Packing for a Red Oxx road trip is 70% planning, 30% improvisation, and 100% searching for that thing you swore you put in the top pocket. The Big Oxx Sprinter was loaded with our most trusted gear:
-
-
PR 5.5 Safari Beano & Flying Boxcar: Built for hauling, stashing, and rescuing “just in case” gear—these duffels are as tough as the road itself.
-
Tri-Fold Shave Kit: Because even in the wild, something should look tidy.
-
Market Tote & Mini Tote: Catch-alls for groceries, errands, and the inevitable wet trunks.
-
Big Bull Tool Roll: Nothing says “prepared” like fixing a stranger’s exhaust with the right wrench.
-
Travel Tray & Packing Cubes: Organization—or at least the illusion of it.
-
Butler Bedroll, Roll-a-Cot, Big Agnes pad: Not glamping—just earning the dirt under your fingernails.
-
Jetboil, Nalgene, Snow Peak titanium cup: The holy trinity of hot, cold, and “I’ll drink anything if it’s from titanium.”
-
Fat tire bike: Because the best detours aren’t on the map.
- Seki Edge nail clippers & Flex-O-Line clothesline: Grooming and laundry—because rugged doesn’t mean sloppy.
-
PR 5.5 Safari Beano & Flying Boxcar: Built for hauling, stashing, and rescuing “just in case” gear—these duffels are as tough as the road itself.
And, of course, Penny the poodle—my sharp-eyed, road-loving co-pilot. Penny came into my life by way of Dog Tag Buddies, an incredible Veteran Service Organization here in Billings dedicated to providing service dogs to veterans. Penny’s not a chewer, just a born traveler: quick to judge my packing skills, quicker to claim her spot by the window, and always up for the next adventure. Every mile is a little better with her in the passenger seat.
Every piece of Red Oxx gear is built to take a beating and keep going—because adventure demands durability.
Wyoming Hot Springs: Where the Road Gets Real
If you think “state-operated, free, and open to everyone” isn’t exciting, you’ve never hit Thermopolis or Saratoga Hot Springs after days on the road. These places are where road trippers, ranchers, and retirees wash away the miles and swap stories you can’t find online.
It’s a reminder that the best parts of America can’t be bought—they’re experienced. Penny’s favorite part? Making new friends and sniffing out every grassy patch from one end of the parking lot to the other.
Telluride: Taking the Leap with Jagged Edge
Rolling into Telluride feels different, for all the right reasons. Erik and the team at Jagged Edge Mountain Gear aren’t just retailers—they’re outdoor experts, gear testers, and the kind of friends who’ll shake your hand even after you’ve managed to get axle grease on their counter.
Choosing Jagged Edge as our first true retailer wasn’t about chasing shelf space. It was about putting Red Oxx where people get it—where every bag, every tote, every zipper gets used, battered, and believed in.
Their staff live and breathe the outdoors. They’ll sell you only what works, and if you ask for advice, you’ll get a story and a map, not a sales pitch.
That’s what growth looks like for us: expanding our reach without giving up an inch on substance or soul.
Montrose: Converts to Rugged Comfort
Montrose was a one-night, gear-packed adventure after our summit at the Jagged Edge factory. No tents—just the Big Oxx Sprinter, an Airstream, and the Overland Kitted crew’s slick new Ineos Grenadier.
Matt, who doubted the bedroll-and-cot system, woke up a believer. There’s nothing like turning a skeptic into a fan with a good night’s sleep, a cup of camp coffee, and a fresh story to bring home. Penny? She was right there with us, patrolling the camp, keeping tabs on both the gear and the breakfast.
Woodland Park: Slow Roads, Lasting Memories
Woodland Park is where I go to see if old roads still have the same magic as my memories. Shawn and I took the Yamaha Tenere 700 and the BMW past the pinyon pines to Canon City. No speed records—just laughs, maybe a marmot darting across the road, and the kind of “remember when” moments that keep us close, even after the miles pile up.
There’s peace in taking it slow and honest satisfaction in knowing you’re not missing a thing. Penny, as always, was along for the ride—head out the window, soaking up every mile, reminding me that sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest memories.
Why Jagged Edge? Rugged Gear Meets Real Adventure
We chose Jagged Edge because Erik and his staff believe what we believe: service, expertise, and a stubborn pride in doing things right.
Their shop is the best place in Colorado to see Red Oxx gear in its element—among people who test it, trust it, and expect it to earn every stitch. That alone is reason enough.
What’s Next: The Road Ahead for Red Oxx
This step matters for Red Oxx. We’re growing, but only on our terms. We’ll always build our gear in Montana, stand behind every bag, and give you our word face-to-face. But growth is part of living, and the only way to keep authentic American craftsmanship alive is to keep moving forward.
An Ask for the Herd
If you believe in quality you can see, touch, and depend on, help us spread the word.
Mention us to a friend who’s tired of cheap zippers, tag us on your next adventure, or just tell your neighbor that things built right still exist. We may not be sold at every store, but with your help, more folks will know where to find the good stuff.
We’re counting on you to help keep the story alive, the craft going strong, and the next campfire full of new faces and fresh tales.
So wherever your road leads—get out there, make some dust, share a story (and a snack with your favorite co-pilot), and don’t wait for things to be perfect. You never know who you’ll inspire or what you’ll discover along the way.
Thanks for riding with us. The best is always just over the next hill. And if you see Penny and me out there, come say hello.
