Just got back from a four week visit to Rwanda and Amsterdam. Used the cable locks on all family backpacks. When we visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, the person doing security commented that he had never seen these kind of locks. I gave him a brief demo. Thanks.

These things are great, they have all kinds of uses.

Four stars because of the fearsome postage.
Using one of mine as a keychain.
Been rattling around in the pocket for 2 months now. No sign of wear, cable still smooth, no kinks no fraying. Takes quite a few turns to undo the clasp so reckon you'd be plain unlucky to have this spring open on you.
As a keychain the length is generous but not too long for the pocket. It's not limp but neither is it so stiff that it pokes your thigh. Hits the Goldilocks zone.
All 10 I purchased look to be well made. Have tested clasp on all 10 and they all unscrewed and went back together as they should.
Customer service (had an issue with initial postage charge due to a glitch on the web page) was responsive and helpful.
Completely satisfied as I type this

I encountered a similar product on a luggage tag and wanted more. These aren't quite as nice as the ones that were on the luggage tag hence the 4-star rating. Should I ever need more (I bought extras) I'll buy these again, though--slightly nicer isn't worth more than twice the price for the next cheapest option I found. (And I don't even know if those were the nicer version.)
There is one way to improve these, though--offer them through Amazon. While they are reasonable about shipping it still adds up when you're talking about a $1 item. Sticking them in a box with other stuff you're ordering would remove this cost.

These can be used for all sorts of semi-permanent affixation. I use one as a key lanyard on my briefcase, and their also great for outdoor use on long hikes and other journeys.
Definitely worth the dollar you spend, and as they say, definitely not too expensive to worry about.

An almost unique product, at a fair price. Very well made, with myriad uses. Can be cabled together for extended length.

I use these cables to attach trackable travel bug tags to items I place in geocaches. Don't have to worry about the tag separating from the trinket.
By Luis, Texas, October 24, 2013
Even though not a lock, gives the appearance of being a lock and keeps zippers from separating. Extremely handy.

These are Great BUT.
When Buying Red oxx Products Air Boss, & Travel Basket you get them included so after ordering them I now have too many..

Simple to use deterrent. At this price, we are able to 'secure' all of our checked bag openings.

Great product that is virtually indestructible. I have one of these, along with a dog tag, on my Air Boss, Gator Carry On and Nomad Shaving Kit. As others have point out, these are great for locking zippers, etc.
By JT, Alexandria, VA, August 23, 2012
It's not a lock, just a smart idea to keep zippers zipped during transit, and to divert opportunistic thieves to easier targets. I like it.
Also, I give my kudos to Red Oxx customer service, which responded quicky and helpfully to my questions.

Great for locking zippers on your bag, also make great key rings. Pick up a few!
By Matt, Tennessee, June 21, 2012
This is a clever idea - it is a cheap but effective way to "lock" your bag without the hassle of a real lock. Also should keep pickpockets out too!

The Perfect addition for use with the REDOXX Metal Dog Tag - safe and secure. Bag Handlers & Thieves worst nightmare !
By Scott, Danville, CA, April 30, 2012
These little gadgets are great! Red Oxx is the first place I've seen them since I got a freebie from Virgin Airways years ago. TSA cut that one off my bag, so hopefully they won't cut these. Anyway, I got a half dozen just to be sure!!

I got one of these with the Air Boss, but lost it. I ordered a couple more with help from the great people at Red Oxx. Very handy for making sure zippers stay together, plus a million other uses.

I use them to loop through the zippers on my camera bag when traveling. It's perfect to stop pickpockets from trying to steal things out of your bags in crowded areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these TSA approved?
Our Luggage Cable Locks are not real locks in the sense they need a key or combination lock. If this is your concern, we recommend you purchase a TSA approved lock.
How strong are these?
The Cable lock has a tensile strength of 36 lbs.
How do I remove these from my bag?
Grasp the cable on one side of the knurl, use the other hand to twist the knurl. If it won't turn, reverse the cable (flip it around) and try again. Remember lefty loosey. The knurl should unscrew by hand without the need of pliers.
Are these theft proof?
The Luggage Cable Lock is not designed to be theft proof, but it certainly might flummox someone not familiar with the design long enough for them to move on to the next bag. Or they might simply cut the cable with a bolt cutter as they would with a typical keyed or padlocked cable lock.
My Cable Lock keeps coming unscrewed, what do I do?
Apply Loctite® Blue Threadlocker to the thread end and screw it closed. This is a medium strength thread lock that would suit most Cable Lock applications. Loctite® Red Threadlocker is the strongest thread locker available. However, you will need heat and tools to unlock the thread if you use the Red Threadlocker.
Can you ship USPS?
Yes, Red Oxx will ship USPS upon request. Simply state, "Please ship USPS" in the cart comments during checkout and we will adjust your billing accordingly.

Simple solution. To a complex problem.
Try our Luggage Cable Lock and you'll never have to remember a combination or carry a key with you again.
How's that? All our made in U.S.A. Red Oxx travel bags come with a Dog Tag "price tag" that's attached to the bag using this wire cable lock. Simply unscrew the wire cable at the knurled thumbscrew, slip the cable through the base holes on the closed zipper tabs on your bag, remove the price tag dog tag, screw it back together and voila, a deceptively simple Luggage Cable Lock that looks permanent (see image in Photos tab).
Any single zipper pocket can also be secured with the cable lock by pulling it through the nylon pull tab (loop) located on the bag at each end of the zipper and through the hole in the base of the zipper tab. Or thread it through the holes in the zippers.
DON'T CUT IT, UNSCREW IT!
In fact, many of our customers have used a wire cutter to remove the dog tag price tags, when all you need to do is unscrew it. Now understand, a determined thief can put their fingers a little way into your bag despite the Cable Lock, but the idea is to slow them or fluster them such that the lock will deter them and they will move on, as most opportunistic thieves do.
If checking your bag, the cables also help keep it from accidentally zipping open. And for only a dollar, that's low cost piece of mind. The 1 mil diameter twisted stainless steel cable has a tested tensile strength of 36 lbs. Now you can purchase the cable lock in any quantity you like.
Our Luggage Cable Lock is six inches long (cable) with knurled thumbscrew (locking mechanism). Note that you can also screw two or more cable locks together to make an extra long cable lock.
Said satisfied customer Charles, "This accessory came with my Sky Train a couple of years ago. I have bought "look-alikes" but none has lasted as long as the original Red Oxx Luggage Cable Lock did, still using it today!"
Buy two or more Cable Locks, you'll always find a use for more than one!
Common Cable Lock usage ideas:
- Secure your luggage by locking your zippers together or a zipper to a pull tab loop.
- Use as a key chain, makes it super easy to change out keys. Remember to secure it tight with Loctite® (see FAQs for further instructions) or you might lose your keys if it comes loose.
- Use it in conjunction with our personalized custom Dog Tags to label your tools, keys, clothes, etc.
- String a bunch together and make a funky (and useful) bracelet or cool necklace.
