I used to travel 105 times a year with the Sky Train. These days, I’m down to about 20 times a year, which is still almost twice a month. I never check a bag if I can help it. I’m not going on safaris or camping trips anymore, just trying to navigate domestic and international air travel with as little nuisance as possible. The right bag makes all the difference. Being able to pack in a hurry, not be hassled by the bag size check at the gate door, fit into overhead or underseat storage in a hurry, and never once worry about zipper breakage, a seam letting go, or strap breakage is a huge relief.
RedOxx uses the best zippers. They aren't pretty. They aren't covered with flaps to claim they're 'water-resistant.' None of that matters. They're the best. The teeth never separate, never uncoil, never jump a tooth, and you can't poke through them with a pen to get into the bag. They're highly reliable - just like everything else about the bag.
The nice thing about the Sky Train is how easy it is to pack. I have other bags that have extra divisions for sorting laptops and water bottles into, and they work less well, because they divide up the space too much. The Sky Train allows me to get in everything I need and more. When I see people in the airport with a RedOxx bag, it's usually the SkyTrain, and I've asked them why they chose it. It's always the same kind of answer - it's the very best.
It's not just a bag for travel, it's also my go bag when I need to pack in a hurry and relocate. I can pack for a week in under 10 minutes and get on the move, whether it's across town to a friend's to take refuge from the heat when the AC has broken (this summer was brutal) or across the world when I had to book international travel in less than 12h and went all carry-on with two children in tow. The last thing you want to worry about is luggage. When I travel with RedOxx, I don't worry. It's peace-of-mind, and it's been worth it.
It doesn't fit well in the overhead on an Embraer commuter jet. That isn't its' fault. Nothing fits in those, short of a briefcase last seen in the go-go 80's. On those occasions, I put it under seat, or it checks at the jetway. But it's always been tough, and never let me down, even when the bag handlers leave it on tarmac in the rain.
I’ve never once had to question the warranty on a RedOxx product, because it’s never let me down. I haven’t tested it, but if RedOxx honors the warranty the way they honor the product by making it such high quality I have no reason to doubt they’d take care of any problem now, or 50 years from now.
I've used a lot of absolutes in this review. "Never." "Always." That's how I feel about it. It's absolutely one of the best bags made. It's not the prettiest. It's not the sharpest for business travel. But it's a tank. It doesn't quit, and that's what I've needed. If you need a reliable bag that won't let you down, Sky Train should be on your list.

I've carried this bag exclusively over the past year and appreciate it more every time. Airline trips, car trips and two two-week trips. It's very liberating to just have one bag to carry and I definitely don't miss waiting at baggage claim! The claw shoulder strap is great. We bought one as a replacement for my husband's carry on bag too. I just ordered three packing cubes to organize shoes, cables, etc. in the top compartment. Can't wait to put them to the test. Do not hesitate to buy the Sky Train!

The Skytrain has become my favorite go to bag. I spent a lot of time lurking on the Red Oxx web site and went all the way in to purchase the Flying Fortress Garment bag. The quality of the bag made me think about a one bag carry on solution and I strongly debated between the benefits between the Skytrain and the Air Boss. After using a Rick Steve's Classic Back Door bag, I preferred the layout of the Skytrain and pulled the trigger. My bag has now been on 5 trips and it just fits everywhere, comfortable as a back pack or using either it's attached handles. As I wrote in my Flying Fortress review, it's a tough bag and it's too easy to fill the bag with heavy things.

We bought this for our daughter who is going away to college. She loves it!
I actually used it for a couple of business trips as my husband has one...I am sold, we are ordering another one.
It is roomy, sturdy and fits easily in overhead.

I purchased this carry-on bag after reading reviews and travel blogs. Glad I did.
For a week long international trip, I did not have to check any bags. This one held everything. Very durable too.

I haven't done much flying in recent years, so when I needed to take a couple of week long trips this past year, I took a hard look at my luggage and decided it was time for something new. The old luggage had held up quite well, considering it was closing in on 40 years old, and wasn't very expensive when new. But I decided I wanted something new, something that would hold a lot, but could also qualify as carry on.
After a lot of looking, I decided to try the Sky Train. Outstanding purchase. I'm more than happy to pay for quality, and that's what I got here. The bag is extremely versatile, holds a truly enormous amount of stuff, and even with an old, heavy laptop in it, was easy and comfortable to carry.
I did run into some 'carry on' issues, although I think it was the airline rather than the bag. Didn't have any problems carrying it on, but on the regional commuter flights to and from the big hubs, the bag wouldn't quite fit in the overhead bins. I don't think that was the fault of the bag - although it was quite well stuffed - but rather that the overhead bin was a bit smaller than it should have been. There was an indentation at the back of the bin that looked like there were cables or wiring or something like that back there, and that 'lump' took away some space in the bin.
Fortunately the bag fit quite well under the seat in front of me, so I didn't have any problems with it. And on the main flight, on the larger aircraft, it fit very easily into the overhead bin.
I was easily able to pack over a week's worth of clothes and supplies, shoes, several books, and on one trip, a big old clunky laptop computer in the bag. It's truly astonishing how much this bag holds.
I am very pleased with the Sky Train, with the design, with the heavy duty construction, with the versatile carrying options, and with the incredible amount of stuff you can fit into it. I am certainly going to purchase additional Red Oxx luggage - this is great stuff!

I have over 5,000,000 airline miles and I have never seen a bag better than this. I have taken a short trip and am awaiting a long trip to Rome and the Greek islands. I am sure it will be great. Thank you for making this!

Sometimes you don't realize the value of something until you may lose it. I checked this bag at the gate on my latest flight and they couldn't find it when I reached my destination. (I did get it back a day later -- YEAH!!!)
I have found this bag to be well worth the investment. It is very durable and has lasted me several years. I expect it to last many more years to come. The details make this bag a great bag. The zippers are great, and the material has held up well. The option to put the bag on as a backpack is very handy, and the straps for that hide away well when not in use. The cover over the handles makes it very easy to pick the bag up and carry it by hand.
My Eagle Creek Cube bags fit perfectly in the two compartments. I can squish a lot of things into the bag -- enough to last for a week's worth of clothing and my other necessities, including a pair of shoes. The bag fits well into the overhead compartment, and can fit under the seat in the plane if you don't have an extra bag to stash there as well.
I love this bag and highly recommend it to anyone who is traveling. I'm going to be careful about checking this bag at the gate because I don't want to be without it again!

I bought my Sky Train after schlepping a wheeled bag thru an airport and hotel that required going up and down stairs. No more. The Sky Train fits comfortably on my back, carries just as much as my old two-wheeler, fits nicely in my work vehicle (I carry a packed "just in case" bag every day), and worked well as a shoulder bag. On one of my first trips with the Air Train (on a ferry boat, not a plane), I had to answer two "where did you get that bag" inquiries, which I happily answered. I think you guys are on to something.

I've been a carry-on only traveler for quite a while - short version: I'm a big man, hard to shop for clothes when the airline misplaces a checked bag. I replaced a reasonable ebags bag (backpack style full sized carryon) with the Sky Train. When I got it, I ended up on the road for 3 weeks in a row.
1. The zippers are solid. Do not doubt the solidity of the zippers - they rock.
2. The straps are super comfy - a little thinner on width than some, but extremely cushy.
3. Fasteners are crazy tough. I've had my d-lock-clip interface come undone on my old bag - not here.
4. The fabric is ox-tough, no joke.
5. Even overstuffed with a week's worth of dress clothes (remember: big man's dress clothes), an extra pair of shoes and gear, with proper packing technique and compression - it ALL fits in the overhead bin without fighting the airline.
If I had one wish, it'd be that the Sky Train v2 has a slightly wider opening for the backpack straps, so I can fit wider "flat" items in the pouch there against my back.
3 weeks on the road and rock solid. I have a new favorite bag for a very long time.
Thanks Red Oxx team, enjoy your big skies - next time I'm at Madison River Brewing, I'll raise my glass in your direction! (Former Boze-angeles/Livingston resident returned to NC).

I searched and searched and searched for the right carry-on bag and after purchasing bags and returning bags, I FINALLY found the Red Oxx Skytrain! Hands down the best travel bag I own. It can hold enough for at least 7 day excursions and still has some room.
I recently had some modifications done to the bag and let's just say I didn't think it could be more perfect than it is...but it is now the tops! I had a daisy chain added to the front of the bag and some jacket straps added to the bottom of the bag. Something similar to my C-ruck that I have from Red Oxx. It has opened up some room to hang items on the outside of the bag and allows more space in the bag.
There are so many reason for you to purchase a Red Oxx bag. They are the most cleverly thought out and ruggedly made bags on the market. You cannot go wrong! Everyone from the casual to the savvy traveler will be able to find something that fits your needs and more. You have so many options from sizing to color that it is a one stop shop. The only problem is how to keep yourself from buying more.
Lacy, at the factory, will help you anyway you need it and is professional and fun in her communications with the customer. She made the whole process fun and even more exciting. She even complemented my choices on the modifications. Anyone who works in the design department and gives you a shout out, makes you feel great. I cannot thank the entire Red Oxx team enough for the products they put out and having the vision to continually adapt and evolve as a company.
I have the Skytrain, C-Ruck, Tri-Fold Shave Kit, Laundro Bag, Travel Basket, Key Pin Mount and I'm getting a Market Tote soon! I will eventually get the Tres Hombres and maybe another one. Don't spend your money anywhere else, SERIOUSLY you will regret it!
I almost want wanna quit playing music and work there...i'm not kidding!

Since I retired, I go to Zimbabwe to hunt every second year. Baggage limits are becoming more stringent, so last year I decided I'd be a "one-bag-packer". I packed rifle, ammo, scope, sling, and other junk into my rifle case and stuffed everything else into the Sky Train. Gotta be honest - it was over the carry-on weight limit but I got two week's worth of hunting clothes and a week's worth of tourist clothes and other stuff into the bag. Outstanding trip, and the Sky Train was brilliant - tough, easy to pack and easy to carry (even over weight). Another trip next year and the Sky Train will be there!

After a month of travel with just one Sky Train each, my husband and I were on the jet bridge, with our bags in backpack mode, ready to board a flight home. A harried airline staff member appeared announcing “there’s no more space in the overhead bins – all bags must be gate checked”. As she grabbed rolling carry-ons from the people ahead of us in line, I was getting ready to tell her that our Sky Trains would fit under the seat, but I didn’t need to say a word. She walked right past us without a glance. And we had no trouble fitting our bags into the overhead. Thanks for a great product.

I love my forest green Sky Train. I was able to fit in everything for a long weekend. Many positive comments from other travelers. Did not have to check my bag on the plane because it wouldn't fit in the overhead (my husband's plight). Sturdy and dependable. So happy not to have wheels taking up packing space. Keep making your superior product in the USA!

Just received my Sky Train with three Kingfisher packing cubes. I decided to do a test pack to see how the bag meets a 2 week packing challenge.
Kingfisher #1: 4 pr of socks, 4 pr of boxer shorts, 2 undershirts.
Kingfisher #2: 3 T shirts and 3 short sleeve collared shirts.
Kingfisher #3: 1 pr long pants, 2 pr shorts, 1 pr swimming trunks.
The 3 cubes are stacked at the bottom of the bag with the longs side (14") oriented with the 13" side of the Sky Train. They fit! Next to the cubes is an Eagle Creek shoe bag containing a pr of size 12 hiking shoes. A 311 bag sits on top. There is room to spare for a couple of more items.
All the clothes fit in the main compartment which leaves the second compartment for my coat and sweater when I clear customs/security. Incidentally, a kingfisher will also fit in the second compartment.
The zippers of the Sky Train easily handle the strain from the sacked packing cubes. It was one of the reasons for choosing Red Oxx. Those zippers require a serious amount of force before they will fail. The bag can handle a massive amount of abuse or over-packing.
I still have more experimentation to do, but I think that this bag will handle anything that I can throw at it.

1 Bag traveling rocks!
By TBird, Oregon, November 13, 2015
After a LOT of research, I chose this bag for a three-week safari in Africa. I could not be more delighted. The size and the well-designed backpack straps made everything from international terminals to econo foreign airlines to shuttle buses a breeze. My favorite feature is the clamshell design that opens flat. I roll my clothes, and this made it easy to find exactly what I wanted without digging through all my items. Just the right number of compartments, too. Of course, I can't say enough about the bomber construction. I can already tell the Sky Train will be traveling with me for many years! Worth every penny!
By Alex Henderson, South Carolina, November 12, 2015
We bought a regular Red Oxx carry on and this convertible. Both have the same great construction. For me the carry on has much better organization than the convertible. If buying again, would probably have bought two regular carry on bags. The regular carry on gets a 5 rating, perfect in almost all respects.
By Anonymous, Tennessee, November 12, 2015
The bag material and zippers are high quality.
The packing strategy worked for my 4 day trip. I haven't packed for a 10 day trip yet, but I'm thinking it's going to be a stretch to get winter clothing packed for 10 days.
I did get the 4 day pack as carry on with no problem. The backpack shoulder straps really help getting from one terminal to another at ATL and AUS.
So, I'm glad I bought it, just wish it was a little less expensive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Sky Train carry-on legal?
Yes, the Sky Train is designed to be carry-on legal
on continental flights and most international ones as well.
What's the best way to pack the Sky Train?
We recommend using our Red Oxx Packing Cubes
. They're designed to work with the dimensions of the Sky Train. You can build your own personal custom packing cube kit. Not into cubes? Try the bundle packing method. Watch the packing video under the Videos tab or download the Sky Train Packing Diagram
What's the difference between the Air Boss and the Sky Train?
There are two principle differences between the Air Boss and the Sky Train: The Sky Train has retractable backpack straps and opens flat lengthwise and has two packing compartments whereas the Air Boss opens flat like a book with three compartments and is carried with the Claw shoulder strap. The Sky Train was also developed with smaller stature travelers in mind.
Will the Sky Train Carry-on fit under the seat in front of me?
Cramming the Sky Train under the seat is not recommended.
Will the Eagle Creek packing cubes fit?
Why bother with cheap imported packing cubes when you can build your own Red Oxx Packing Cubes Custom Kit designed to work in conjunction with your Sky Trian. Or try our Nomad Shave Kit, Lil Roy Gadget Bag as packing cubes. You can color co-ordinate them to your preference and they come with useful carry handles. The Tri-fold Toiletry bag is also a brilliant shave kit or makeup organizer due to its three individual zippered mesh pockets and unique fold open flat hanging design.
How many pounds will the Sky Train weigh when packed?
It depends on what you pack. A typical 3-5 day load will weigh about 20-25 pounds.
How many days travel can I fit in the Sky Train?
Most folks can get about 3-5 days with a typical load. Some adventurous types have been able to pack from a week to 10 days! It all depends on how you pack and what you pack.
Where do I pack the laptop?
You can use the back compartment. We recommend that you use a padded neoprene sleeve to secure your laptop.
What's the best way to pack footwear?
Sole to sole to minimize the dirt and placed in either compartment. We recommend placing your shoes in a plastic bag. Or try a Nomad or Meerkat Packing Tube.
Can I change the logo color?
Sure. Simply order your favorite color Logo Patch
and sew it on yourself. Red Oxx cannot change the patch colors for you.
Can I order a bag without the logo?
Logo Patches are centered using a hole punch. If you remove the patch, there will be a hole in the bag that could cause a snag. Red Oxx cannot build a bag without a logo as this would disrupt the efficiency of the production line. Feel free to use a permanent marker to color the patches.
Is there a way to securely lock my bag?
Sure, you can use any TSA approved bag lock
or try our Cable Lock
for a simple, semi-secure solution. Watch this video where CEO Jim Markel demonstrates how you can use the cable that comes with the product Dog Tag
price tag to secure your bag
. Keep in mind, any determined thief can still cut open a soft sided bag with a sharp knife.
Are there any interior pockets?
The Sky Train Hybrid bag has two generous internal compartments and one small internal zippered pocket.
My zipper broke. The teeth have separated. Do I send it in for warranty repair?
No need for warranty repair, try and fix it yourself. Check out this video where CEO Jim Markel shows how easy it is to do it yourself.
Why doesn't the Sky Train come with a waist strap?
The bag was not designed to operate with a waist strap. However, you can use a pair of Luggage Compression Straps
to cinch down the bag from the outside. Wrap one strap around the top, about 4-6 inches down, and the second strap further down, about 4-6 inches from the bottom. The top strap, if cinched tighter than the bottom strap, will pull the pack closer to your upper body, relieving excessive weight from the pack on your hips.
Another option is to take a belt, any belt will do, and thread it through the holes in the smuggler's pocket at the base of the bag where the backpack straps attach to the bag. While not a very comfortable way to travel, using a belt this way can also relieve some weight off the hips. The best solution however, is to focus on traveling light and not over pack your Sky Train. Use the internal cinch straps to hold your belongings in place and minimize wrinkles.
Can you ship USPS?
Yes, Red Oxx will ship USPS upon request. Simply state, "Please ship USPS" in the cart comments during checkout and we will adjust your billing accordingly.
“I just say no to checked bag fees.”
In stock orders ship same day if received by 4:00 PM Mountain Standard Time!
Carry-on! On your back.
Our Red Oxx travelers called it awesome! Imagine, a convertible hybrid backpack and carry-on travel bag in one.
Your idea of carry-on perfection? The Sky Train meets your desire for hands-free, easy-on, easy-off boarding of planes or trains. Specially designed for the leisure traveler going to Europe or beyond. Keeps you moving. No waiting for late or lost luggage--it's with you all the way. A bag built for mobility. Once your Sky Train is on, you're gone!
DESIGNED BY TRAVEL EXPERTS.
In 2007 Red Oxx teamed up again with web author and travel expert Doug Dyment of OneBag.com fame to develop this carry-on backpack travel bag. Doug called it the "quintessential dual-purpose bag". Think flexible-- this mobile carry-on bag can be carried five different ways:
1. Carry like a suitcase using the Euro handle on the side.
2. Vertically using the Euro handle on the top of the bag.
3. Over your shoulder like a messenger bag using the Claw Shoulder Strap.
4. Cross body, carried like a messenger bag, again using the Claw Shoulder Strap.
5. Or pull out the retractable backpack straps from the smugglers pocket and travel in hands-free comfort.
The grab loop Euro handles on the sides also help stowing the bag in the overhead bin. Fits continental airline luggage boarding size restriction box and most international ones, too. Includes an adjustable and removeable sternum chest strap.
PLACES FOR YOUR BELONGINGS.
The Sky Train Carry-on features two main interior compartments and one full-length outside zippered flat pocket. The main compartment tie downs cinch down to the closed cell Volara foam, securing your clothing. These tie downs help keep your slacks and dress shirts wrinkle-free until you can hang them up in the hotel. Easily holds three pairs of slacks and three blouses with room leftover for a light jacket.
The secondary compartment has a foam stay and a small pocket for stashing personal items (9" x 12") and is spacious enough to hold your Toiletries, shoes, or workout gear... The rigid sewn-in Volara foam padding protects your belongings, but is still flexible enough to shove into a cramped overhead bin.
HOW TO PACK IT.

FIVE REASONS TO OWN RED OXX SKY TRAIN
1. A CONVERTIBLE CARRY-ON BAG BUILT LIKE A TANK?
Our customers like to define our gear as "built like a tank". While obviously you're not going to be toting around bags that weigh 50 tons and have three inches of armor plate, still the comparison is valid. For a carry-on bag, Sky Trains are built tough. Starting with the most durable soft textile material available, 1000 weight CORDURA® Brand Nylon, we use super strong UV resistant thread that is double stitched into every seam. Rugged, reliable and tough.
2. BOUND AND BAGGED TO NEVER FRAY.
Places where two separate pieces of fabric are stitched together are then bound, that is, we take a long piece of one inch wide nylon webbing and fold it over the edges of the two pieces and stitch them together, this creates a strong seam, or binding, that prevents the pieces from unraveling on the inside of the bag, or gives it a clean finished look if on the outside of the bag.
In addition, each exposed fabric edge, such as on a pocket flap, is also bound using a thicker binding material. Inside edges typically receive a thinner nylon webbing, whereas outside corner edges that are exposed to wear will have a thicker nylon binding. All of our binding material is vertically woven to prevent fraying, peeling or splitting that you may commonly see in competitors bags that brag of "binding" their edges.
3. WHY DOUBLE BOX STITCHING?
Each stress point, such as where the handles attach to the bag, is double box stitched - which is where we get the "double XX" in our name, Red OXX; a stitching practice we adapted from our time as parachute riggers.
4. MY, WHAT BIG ZIPPERS YOU HAVE!
The reason Red Oxx uses the largest practical zipper we can find, the #10 YKK VISLON® zipper, is that they are easily repairable, even in the field; they will hold their place, that is, they "lock"; they are difficult to penetrate, thereby increasing the security of your belongings; they function smoothly in inclement weather and they can be yanked from a variety of angles without losing teeth or becoming separated.
PUTTING THE HARD IN HARDWARE.
Red Oxx has occasionally been accused of "overdoing" our hardware. But once you've had a cheap piece of imported plastic hardware break in the middle of a busy intersection, airport or other inconvenient locale dumping your precious belongings all over the ground for all the world to see (and steal), having a heavy-duty nickel-plated or stainless steel D ring or attachment swivel that weighs just a little more, or might make a little noise, is a travel companion's confidence builder and peace of mind maker. After all, you want to enjoy your journey as best you can. Traveling with a Sky Train Convertible Backpack bag, you'll know it won't bust apart and break you down.
