The perfect size, very durable, and the amethyst color makes it stand out from all the other travelers baggage. I would purchase it again and recommend it to all my friends
By Phil, Connecticut, March 31, 2016
As advertised, rugged, perfect size, attractive.
The only minor annoyance was that the buckle kept falling into side pockets when trying to zip up, but not really a problem.

This bag fits the overhead bin on the smaller regional jets.
By Ellen, Ohio, February 11, 2016
My husband bought me this bag for Christmas and I was very happy with it. It makes a great weekend go away bag and it has lots of pockets and zippers to fit all my stuff in. I love the color, it's Bordeaux and it's really lovely. I would recommend this bag to others.

Prior to going on a recent safari to Tanzania I started looking for a sturdy, well made, duffel bag. I wanted a bag which could handle everything I was taking with me, and that I could take on a plane as carry-on, the Safari Beano PR5 was the perfect bag.
I searched for, and looked at, numerous duffels, including some I sent back after seeing the poor quality. That did not happen with the Red Oxx PR5. Once I received and looked it over, I knew this was the perfect bag. The sturdiness of the material, the strength of the zippers, and the lifetime warranty, make it a great bag for travel.
On this trip the bag spent many hours in the back of a Range Rover, and was moved around between four camps. It survived without a single issue, and I found it to be one of the best bags I have owned. It is heading to Cabo in a few weeks.
I am thrilled I found your site, and ordered this bag. I suspect I will be buying additional items from your company in the future, and visiting your store the next time I am in Billings.
Thanks for a great product.

Have had this bag for the past 3 years and have taken it on several trips across the pond tramping around Europe. This bag has also traveled thousands of domestic miles on planes, trains and automobiles. I have to say this bag is a must have for anyone who is a frequent traveler and demands space, quality and functionality of their kit.. The quality is outstanding and hard to beat, great work Red Ox.

Searched and searched online for the "best" safari bag. Did lots of research and kept coming back to the Red Oxx PR5. Ordered two for our trip to Africa. LOVE the bags. Well made, sturdy, and its amazing how much they hold! Fit nicely in the overhead of all but the smallest plane. Highly recommend the product.
By Kathy, Connecticut, October 22, 2015
This bag paired with the Chica bag was all that I carried for a three week, five country, five bush camp safari in Africa. The small size was necessary for the limited baggage space on the Cessna planes between camps.
The camps provided laundry service with air drying so there was no need for a larger bag.
Thanks for a great product.

I travel roughly 2 weeks a month lately. This bag is both the correct size (big enough to haul away a few bottles of whiskey, or temporarily stash my 'under seat' bag; small enough to collapse down for storage) and the correct weight (good shoulder strap bag). It takes a serious beating. The only thing that I would add to make it perfect would be backpacking straps.
By Mike, Upstate, NY, September 27, 2015
Very happy I purchased this bag. I took some time to compare duffels from a variety of manufacturers and came across RED OXX online and took a chance and bought the PR5. This bag is worth the money.
I will definitely have this bag a very long time and I use duffels every week because I work construction and am constantly on the road.
I like how they're made in the U.S.A by American workers. I see a few more RED OXX products that Id like to buy in the near future. Keep up the good work!

This is an extremely well built bag. I feel like I will have it forever....it seems pretty indestructible. I love the olive color and the sales/customer service staff was excellent. The only minor complaint would be that the bag itself seems quite heavy......and by the time you fill all the pockets and available space inside, it takes abit to haul this bag around. But that does not deter from my excellent rating, I think it's quite worth the price.
By Rob, , September 10, 2015
I was super impressed with the toughness, zippers and straps just as the reviews I read said I would.
My only take back on this bag is the end pockets. They are good and usable but just not as big as you would think. I have a fairly average to small shoe size 9 1/2 and I can't my shoes in the end pockets without some serious bending.
While I can still get all of my gear in the bag w/ some changes in the way I pack, it's just not as easy to keep my dress shoes unbent or keep smelly gym shoes away from my other clothes.
By Keith C., Oklahoma, September 9, 2015
I've been living out of this bag for the last 3 months. I can get everything I need in it, with the Trifold Bag included:
2 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of shorts, 10 shirts, flip flops, light jacket, and all the little stuff.
I was concerned it might be too small, but not anymore. My wife got the 5.5 and seems so much bigger, but honestly it carries everything I need in a great compact size...oh, and you can stuff the HECK out of it! Great set up! No regrets.
By Family Ten Camper, Geneva, IL, August 16, 2015
We have used this bag as my wife's camping bag for the last 4 years or so. We have tent camped all over the west and this bag works great. It holds just the right amount of clothes for 3-5 nights of camping depending on how cold it is and how much bulky clothing is packed in the bag. Recently, our new dog found the bag and chewed on the zipper teeth. Fortunately, we were traveling through Bozeman, Montana on our way home from our last camping trip and dropped the bag off at their store. They fixed it for free and sent it back to us in a few days. Excellent customer service! Thanks!

This bag is amazingly sturdy and useful! I've shredded every other duffel bag I've had, but this bag stands up to me. The pockets at the ends are perfect for sticking in a few books or a waterbottle and a lunch. And it held enough luggage for two people for a week!
I used it for a lot of train and plane travel. I do wish that there were one or two side handles (to grab more easily from overhead compartments). It would also be nice if there were backpack straps -- if you're tall/muscular, you'll have no problem carrying a full bag, but I definitely felt the strain carrying a full one around sometimes. However, these are two minor criticisms -- overall I am very happy with the bag and look forward to using it for years to come.
By Ron, California, July 30, 2015
I was looking for a bag to use as a carry on for training trips my company was sending me on. Used it twice so far. Was able to fit 1 weeks worth of clothes and had room for more. Sturdy construction. Great zippers.
By John, Midland, Texas, July 9, 2015
Finishing my first week long trip with my PR5 and its the only bag I brought for clothes. More than enough room I believe icould pack it fo 10 days with out a problem. Organized an easy carry on travel. Love it!
By Bill, Wimberley, TX, July 3, 2015
I used this bag as my only bag for a three week trip south of the border involving aircraft and buses.
This bag holds a LOT and still fits in an overhead bin of a 737, but not however on a long haul luxury bus. Had to be checked - bummer - but not the fault of the bag.
It holds so much stuff that I kept loading more until the results were, well, a heavy bag. Again, not the fault of the bag. The shoulder strap works great!
The workmanship is superb and the bag is definitely rugged. I have total confidence in the zippers (for a change.)
The addition of luggage locks and cable locks create enough of a "Chinese Puzzle" to discourage would-be thieves looking for a target of opportunity. I typically purchase bright colors to make it easier to spot the bag should it attempt to wander off.
There is only one thing I would add or modify - the "floor" or bottom of the bag. I feel it needs another layer for "stiffening" for easier packing and abbrasion and moisture insurance, but I'm not disappointed.
Overall, an excellent bag.

My husband and I bought two of these bags for a light packing excursion over in Africa. For three weeks, we needed to carry all of our gear in a carry on sized duffel with no metal framework to fit into the various aircraft and safari vehicles. The bags were tossed, dragged, sat upon, rolled, stacked, piled in with heavier packs, and all while being stuffed to the point where it was impossible to stuff anymore. They were also exposed to harsh sun, constant dust, and salt water. All material and zippers held up marvelously with no frays or tears. The tightly woven mesh of the bags kept the dust out. And the zippers kept on working even though to cram things in, the bags had to be repositioned to allow gravity to help settle the contents in order to actually zip up! Yes, these bags are expensive. But they held up like champs and will give us many years of durable service.

Perfect for my needs and the right size. Bullet proof construction. It's got a place for everything.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the differences in size of the Beanos bags?
The PR5, a step up from the PR4, was designed for legal carry-on travel. The PR5-5 is sized between the PR5 and the largest of the series, the PR6.
Will the PR5 qualify as a personal item?
The PR5 is designed as more of a smaller carry-on than a personal item. It's too big to be a personal item.
What's the difference between the PR5 Carry-on Bag and Flying Boxcar?
The Flying Boxcar has a full length main compartment with extra raised pockets located on the side of the bag, whereas the PR4/5 have a shorter main compartment and the pockets on both ends. The Flying Boxcar also features grab handles on the ends and a padded bottom with reinforced ballistic nylon, our toughest.
How many days of travel will fit in the PR5?
The PR5 was designed to hold up to a weeks worth of clothes. Some proficient packers could stuff it for 10 days. Obviously, it really depends on what you pack and how you pack it.
Can I fit my laptop in it?
Most 15" and up notebooks and tablets should fit in the main compartment.
Is the PR5 padded on the bottom?
Our Sun Chaser
and Flying Boxcar are padded on the bottom. The PR Safari Beano's series of duffel bags is not padded.
Why are there two zippers on the back pocket?
This is a special "pass through" pocket that allows you to mount the bag over the handle of a wheeled bag.
Is there a way to securely lock my bag?
Sure, you can use any TSA approved bag lock
or try our Cable Lock
for a simple, semi-secure solution. Watch this video where CEO Jim Markel demonstrates how you can use the cable that comes with the product Dog Tag
price tag to secure your bag
. Keep in mind, any determined thief can still cut open a soft sided bag with a sharp knife.
What are the D-Rings for at the end of the zippers?
The D-rings allows you to lock your zippers closed. Again, one can still cut open the bag with a knife.
What's the best way to pack the PR5?
We recommend the bundle wrap method developed by Doug Dyment of Onebag.com fame. Use our luggage packing diagram
(Pdf file). Watch the packing video for excellent packing tips. Which brings us to the next question...
Will the Eagle Creek packing cubes fit the PR5?
Skip the cheap imported packing cubes and build your own custom Red Oxx Packing Cube Kit.
Or try our Nomad Shave Kit
, Lil Roy Gadget Bag
or Tri-fold Toiletry bag as packing cubes. You can color co-ordinate them to your preference and they come with useful carry handles. The Tri-fold Toiletry bag
is also a brilliant shave kit organizer due to its three individual zippered mesh pockets and unique fold open flat hanging design.
Is this the Railroad Grip?
The Railroad Grip is a different bag. It is sized differently to accommodate the lamp, rule book, radio and is built with a heavy-duty ballistic nylon. While the PR5 is a strong bag and is warranted for life, the Grip is the bag of choice for railroaders.
How does the PR5 compare to the Sky Train or Air Boss?
The PR5 is a duffel style bag with a main center compartment and two raised end compartments, whereas the Air Boss
is a carry-on bag with 3 main central compartments. The Sky Train is a double main compartment carry-on bag that has retractable backpack straps. All three bags are carry-on legal.
Will my shoes fit in the end pockets?
Depends on the shoe! A child's shoes would fit as would most women's average foot size, perhaps (7-8). Boots will not fit and most men's shoes would be too large.
Are there any interior pockets?
The PR5 features a main compartment, flat side pockets and dual end pockets. It does not have interior pockets.
My zipper broke. The teeth have separated. Do I send it in for warranty repair?
No need for warranty repair, fix it yourself. Check out this video where CEO Jim Markel shows how easy it is to do it yourself.
Can you ship USPS?
Yes, Red Oxx will ship USPS upon request. Simply state, "Please ship USPS" in the cart comments during checkout and we will adjust your billing accordingly.

BEST TRAVEL GEAR OF THE YEAR AWARD.
Outside Magazine recognized the Safari Beanos PR5 Carry-on Duffel bag as one of 2004's 15 best outdoor products.
James Glave, editor for Outside Buyer's Guide, said:
"Winning products must offer cutting-edge design and be really rugged. Our testers dragged it with a car down the sidewalk and threw it off the second-story balcony and tried to destroy it. We really place enormous emphasis on rigorous testing."
As does Red Oxx! The proof in the pudding as they say.
Read the review about this outstanding carry-on bag, voted best Gear of the Year by Outside Magazine. Also endorsed as an ideal safari travel duffel by famous professional outdoor writer, Craig Boddington, from the sportsman TV series "Tracks Across Africa" and Safari Spokesman Ivan Carter on "Hornady's Africa with Ivan Carter".
WHERE DO MY BELONGINGS GO?
Set up with the same layout as its little brother the PR4, this award winning carry-on duffel features three rectangular storage compartments for maximum space efficiency. Dual end pockets have zippers that zip halfway down the sides for easy access to packed items.
The opening for the main compartment flips back out of the way for unrestricted access to the entire compartment. Twin turn locks keep the lid secure and anchored D-rings allow cable locks to be attached to the zippers for extra peace of mind if traveling as checked baggage.
The zippered front flat pocket keeps your passport or reading materials handy. The pass-through panel on the back side is designed for use with wheeled luggage as a docking sleeve. Unzip top and bottom zippers and slip it over the wheeled bags telescoping carry handle. Or leave the bottom zipper closed and it doubles as a second flat exterior pocket.

HOW TO CARRY THIS BAG.
Includes the famous Claw No-Slip Shoulder Strap. Attached using heavy-duty 360 degree "claw-like" swivels, this strap hardware will endure any abuse imaginable-- quickly detaching for storage inside.
SIX REASONS TO OWN RED OXX SAFARI BEANOS PR5 DUFFEL BAG
1. A RELIABLE BUSINESS TRAVEL BAG BUILT LIKE A TANK?
Our fans like to define our gear as "built like a tank". While obviously you're not going to be toting around bags that weigh 50 tons and have three inches of armor plate, still the comparison is valid. For a carry-on bag, the PR-5 Duffel is built tough. Starting with the most durable, flexible, and practical textile material available -- 1000 weight CORDURA® Brand Nylon, the PR-5 is built using super-strong UV-resistant thread that's stitched into every seam. Rugged, reliable and tough.
2. BOUND AND BAGGED = STURDY SEAMS.
Places where two separate pieces of fabric are stitched together are then bound -- that is, we take a long piece of one-inch wide nylon webbing and fold it over the edges of the two pieces and stitch them together, this creates a strong seam, known as a binding, that prevents the pieces from unraveling on the inside of the bag, or gives it a clean, finished look if on the outside of the duffel.
3. BINDING INSIDE / BINDING OUTSIDE, NEVER UNRAVELS.
In addition, each exposed outside fabric edge, such as on a pocket flap, is also bound using a thicker binding material. Inside edges typically receive a thinner nylon webbing, whereas outside corner edges that are exposed to heavy wear have a thicker nylon binding. All of our binding material is vertically woven to prevent the fraying, peeling or splitting that you may commonly see in competitors carry-on bags that brag of "binding" their edges.
4. WHY DOUBLE BOX STITCHING?
Each stress point, such as where the handles attach to the bag, is double box stitched - which is where we get the "double XX" in our name, Red OXX; a stitching practice we adapted from our experience as parachute riggers.
5. MY, WHAT BIG ZIPPERS YOU HAVE!
The reason Red Oxx uses the largest practicle zipper available, the #10 YKK VISLON® zipper, is that they're easily repairable, even in the field; they will hold their place, that is, they "lock"; they are difficult to penetrate, thereby increasing the security of your belongings from casual theft; they function smoothly in inclement weather, and they can be yanked from a variety of angles without losing teeth or becoming separated.
6. PUTTING THE HARD IN HARDWARE.
Red Oxx has occasionally been accused of "overdoing" our hardware. But once you've had a cheap piece of imported plastic "hardware" break in the middle of a busy intersection, airport or other inconvenient locale dumping your precious belongings all over the ground for everyone to see (and steal), having a heavy-duty nickel-plated or stainless steel D ring or attachment swivel that weighs just a tiny bit more, or might make a little noise, is a travel companion's confidence builder and peace-of-mind maker. After all, you want to enjoy your journey as best you can. Why worry about having your favorite carry-on travel duffel bust apart and break you down?
Why not join the carefree carry-on crowd with an award winning PR5 Safari Beanos Duffel Bag today?
