A bit more width at the top would make it perfect
By Tallin, Illinois, October 22, 2015
I've been using the Rock Hopper for nearly two months now, primarily for carrying a few IT items to and from work. It feels like it's built to last for life, easy to adjust, and serves me well most of the time. Having two large compartments with the smaller front pocket is great for basic organization, and I plan on using it daily on an upcoming week long family vacation to Disney World. It has a nice low profile that makes it ideal as a day bag to hold thin jackets or fleeces, a camera (in a moderately protective case), stuff for the kids, souvenirs, etc. With that said, just a few more inches of width at the top would make this one of the best bags around.
I have a small laptop (11.7” x 8.8” x 0.6”) that I keep in a leather sleeve, which adds a little more to the dimensions. I have to zip one side, smash the laptop in the sleeve over to the zipped side, and push in on the corner of the leather sleeve in order to completely zip the bag.
It is also not possible to store a folder made for 8.5" x 11" documents without bending the folder or possibly the documents. To give you an idea, while the bag measures 10" at the base, it is significantly less at the part that crosses the logo patch above the outside compartment zipper (about 6"). You have a little more width below from the middle to the logo patch, but not much. I realize this bag is not aimed at people trying to carry laptops and documents, which is why it works for me most of the time. But at a cost of just 2" to 2.5" more inches width at the top and a negligible amount of weight, this bag could be way more functional while maintaining most of the current design. I would be the first to pay the extra cost for an updated version.

Definitely a great product. Made my expectations with regards to craftsmanship (my 2nd Red Oxx). Just a smidge undersized for what I planned on carrying (wink), but am making it work. Retired my dual- strap bags, and will stay with the single strap Rock Hopper, in the future. Would recommend for anyone looking for a grown up pack.

I am a Redoxx junky. My most recent order saw me purchasing three separate bags and some accessories. In adition to those I have three or four more. I don't buy any other bags unless they are baseball related. For purposes of travelling around town or across country Redoxx is my preferred bag of choice. So, why do I love this bag, the rock hopper? I can carry it three ways, cross body, on my left shoulder, slung on my hip, strapped to my chest, and well, maybe more than three ways.
It is perfect for my day bag. I have pretty much replaced my purse with this bag. It is perfect for my two wallets, yes, I carry two of them, and not because I'm so rich :):, cell phone and its charger, lunch, papers, a soda can, a water bottle, the one you guys sell, the small one :):, baby wipes, for me, not a baby since I think they're a girl's best friend :):, a cane since I'm blind and use one for navigation, it folds up nicely and fits in the bag easily, and, as another reviewer mentioned earlier, it goes well on a public bus. Of course, I attach bells and whistles to the zippers because where I live in Texas now it's too hot to wear them any other way. I use this bag almost exclusively for round town trips because it is so hot here.
The bag fits comfortably, it can be light weight depending on what goes in it, slips easily out of the way, and fits comfortably under my left arm. These are all very important things to me since I think space is a premium. I also carry hand lotion, a bottle of Advil, a towel, and snacks. No bag is complete without an apple, soda, and granola bars. They're my standard snacks with or without lunch. I love this bag and it was in my favorite color, too: red and black.
I have to admit it took me a few tries to figure out how to carry it since my other experience with cross body was not so diverse. I constantly adjust the pack to fit whatever I'm carrying and whereever I am going. I will carry this on the plane as my personal item when I travel to Austin in a month or two. I'll say it again: I love this bag, and I have a lot of Redoxx bags.

I use this bag just about every day. It has a wonderful amount of storage space.
I highly recommend this for anyone who wants a convenient bag for "knocking around".

After owning this bag for a couple of months, I can't add any new perspectives on the Rock Hopper that haven't already been mentioned in other reviews (i.e. the convenient size, quality construction, and comfort), I can only corroborate them.
One thing I will mention though, is that while it's a handsome bag, it's not as svelte as some other options and is clearly geared for more robust uses than to carry around with you while you shop–in my humble opinion, anyway.

I bought this and a Tres Hombres for my trip to South America. We had an apartment in Santiago and did 2 day trips. I used the RockHopper as my plane carry on (iPad, books, etc) In country I used it as an day trip and overnight bag. It was ideal. Big enough to handle 36-48 hours out but small enough to be manageable. The only thing I wish it had was a loop handle at the top. For security I would take it off standing in lines. It would be nice to have a handle to hold it like a briefcase in those situations.

As an IT professional, the Rock Hopper is a perfect fit. Big enough for small laptop or tablet, paperwork and peripherals yet small enough to fit anywhere during travel or meetings. Rock solid construction!!! Love this bag!

Great service in delivery. The bag itself is a really useful day bag & great for running as it clings to your body rather than bouncing.

I operate cranes at the port of LA/ LB and my bag is perfect. It fits in a confined space without getting in the way. There's plenty of room in the interior, with the compartments making it easy to store everything I need for work. The only thing I wish it had, is a hook or clip for my keys in one of the compartments. Thank you for making it in the USA.

Great bag. Nice and light. great walking around town. Also perfect for cycling.
By Joel, california, October 25, 2013
Well made, sturdy.
Can carry on your back or chest.
Holds enough that it becomes heavy enough to be uncomfortable after extended wearing (the single strap means your shoulder can get sore).
Teardrop shape makes it easier to swing around to front, but makes it harder to fit stuff in.
Could use some rings on which to suspend things such as water bottles, hats, jackets, etc.
Leave the rockhopper alone (well, add some rings to hang things off of) but make a different kind of rucksack - one designed for urban use. What does that mean? No (or minimal) external pockets, secure access to main compartment(s) (perhaps back [of body] access or top access, no access from the outside). So, different from your existing rucksacks.

I love this bag. It was my first sling style bag and i would never go back to dual straps for a daybag now. It's great to be able to swing around easily to access it. I love the hardware and rugged build quality of everything. The peach facing on the strap is terrific when riding a bicycle as it's easy on the face when doing headchecks and it also dried quickly when wet much to my surprise. About the only suggestions i have is that it would be great to have an internal key clip in the front pouch and possibly an external mesh pouch for a water bottle. You really should buy this bag.

I use my Rock Hopper for everyday business use as well as for weekend hiking. I love it so much I bought three more. My sons loved them so much they each asked for one. People ask about it wherever I go, and I'm happy to tell them it's comfortable, reliable, and rugged.
Perfect for my daily commute
By Anonymous, Norway, June 21, 2013
I bought this to have something that could fit an extra sweater, some papers, perhaps a few groceries, etc, and be really quick to load and unload. It fulfills that role better than I expected, and is very comfortably to carry. I'm about 6'2" so small backpacks are often ergonomical nightmares or simply look stupid, so a comfortable, small bag like this is great.
(Oh, and please don't add more features or small stuff, it's great as it is. Extra small pockets and zippers are just extra weight and stuff that break for this customer. ;) )

I took a 5 day trip to Boston (Grandson 's school trip) and then took a 6 day trip to Arizona. Both times I carried on both bags, Airboss and the Rockhopper.
Everything I needed was contained in just those two bags. They are quality construction and can carry a bunch of stuff. I am a big guy and my clothes take up more space but I was able to take everything I wanted and then some coming home.
The Rockhooper held my netbook and tablet, snacks, check in items, belts, etc with room to spare. Great item to have.
Nice Bag but I a couple changes would be nice
By Darin, Texas, November 22, 2012
I was looking for a bag to use for day trips thru the airport. I wanted something to hold my ipad, some chargers, keys, etc. It holds everything, but it can be hard to find smaller items. A place for smaller items like RSA tokens, car keys etc would be a plus. The front pocket is huge - too huge.
Also, it would be nice if my 15' Mac Book Pro would fit in it. Of course then the bag might be too big.
I would like to see one that would hold a 15" Mac Book Pro and has some smaller zipper pockets to hold other items. I am saying zippered because on my Red Oxx CPA Briefcase - the outer pockets have come loose as a carry on and stuff has fallen out to never be seen again.
For the price - I am not sure I would buy it again.

I would give this bag five stars for both quality (its Red Oxx so that almost goes without saying) and style. It really is a very cool looking bag and I have used it for business travel and even as a diaper bag. It survived Disney World much better than I did!
So why did I knock off a star? When I carried it around Disney for ten to twelve hours a day for five days I noticed that the single strap didn't provide quite as much support as a traditional backpack. It also isn't designed to be able to switch between shoulders.
You can wear it on your right shoulder like a traditional backpack strap or you can put your head through the strap and wear it like a messenger bag strap on your left shoulder. I found the latter to be the most comfortable but after several long days loaded down as the family mule my left shoulder definitely paid the price.
The pockets are very simple, two large compartments and the front pouch....which I much prefer to some bags with all the small specialized storage spaces. When I travel it fits nicely under the airplane seat and I can easily find all my junk when I need it.
All in all this is one cool sack and if you want something with an extra bit of style that isn't your traditional messenger bag or backpack then this just might be for you.

I purchased the Rockhopper as my wife nabbed my usual daypack for her computer on this trip. The capacity and ease of use was great. My only issue with the bag was that it is configured for one's right shoulder. My personal inclination is to carry day-packs on my left shoulder, leaving my right arm free. I worked around this by slinging it cross-body or wearing it on the front.
A left-shoulder variant would be a nice option. Possibly a small inner pocket in the outer pocket up off the bottom of the back so certain items of import aren't all in the bottom of the pack.
Great complementary bag with my Beanos PR5 and SkyTrain.
By Andrew, Arizona, July 6, 2012
This bag is awesome. I transferred everything from my old bag and it doesn't seem nearly as heavy on my shoulder. I have absolutely no concerns that the bag will rip, tear or otherwise fail to function. I would have a few suggestions for the next iteration of the bag, including some type of small pocket on the outside for a cell phone, perhaps a water bottle pocket on the side and a little padding on the bottom. Still, this bag is exactly what I needed. I've already ordered my Air Boss based on the quality of the Rock Hopper. Can't wait to travel now.

This is the perfect bag for day hikes, college or high school, and work. I work on the railroad and using this bag for day to day use was perfect and held everything I needed. It is also a great bag for college classes and the strap is comfortable to wear between classes.

5 REASONS TO OWN RED OXX GEAR
1. A SLING BAG BUILT LIKE A TANK.
Our customers like to define our gear as "built like a tank". While obviously you're not going to be toting around sling bags that weigh 50 tons and have three inches of armor plate, still the comparison is valid. For a bag, they are built tough. Starting with the most durable textile material available, 1000 weight CORDURA® nylon, we use super strong UV resistant thread that's stitched into every seam.
2. BOUND AND BAGGED.
Places where two separate pieces of fabric are stitched together are then bound, that is, we take a long piece of one inch wide nylon webbing and fold it over the edges of the two pieces and stitch them together, this creates a strong seam, or binding, that prevents the pieces from unraveling on the inside of the bag, or gives it a clean finished look if on the outside of the bag. All of our binding material is vertically woven to prevent fraying, peeling or splitting that you may commonly see in less expensive bags that brag of "binding" their edges.
3. WHY DOUBLE BOX STITCHING?
Each stress point, such as where the single shoulder strap attaches to the bag, is double box stitched - which is where we get the "double XX" in our name, Red Oxx; a stitching practice we adapted from our service as parachute riggers.
4. MY, WHAT BIG ZIPPERS YOU HAVE!
The reason Red Oxx uses the largest zipper we can afford, the #10 YKK VISLON® zipper, is that they are easily repairable, even in the field; they will hold their place, that is, they "lock"; they are difficult to penetrate, thereby increasing the security of your belongings; they function smoothly in inclement weather and they can be yanked from a variety of angles without losing teeth or becoming separated.
5. PUTTING THE HARD IN HARDWARE.
Red Oxx has occasionally been accused of "overdoing" our hardware. But once you've had a cheap piece of plastic hardware break in the middle of a busy intersection, airport or other inconvenient locale dumping your precious belongings all over the ground, having a heavy-duty nickel-plated or stainless steel D ring or attachment swivel that weighs just a little more, or might make a little noise, is a travel companion's confidence builder and peace of mind maker. After all, you want to enjoy your journey as best you can. Why worry about having your bag break you down? Rugged, reliable and tough.
