Just got my new Red Oxx bag. Can't wait to try it out and see how it holds up on the railway. Heard nothing but great comments from fellow co-workers. Price was a bit high. but when I got my bag from Red Oxx in the mail, I thoroughly inspected it, there is no way this bag is going to rip or tear. Well worth the money!! Was very surprised to see how much stuff you could fit in the bag, and still have extra storage. Hope this is the last bag I will have to buy working on the rail. Will send another review in the near future. Don't let the price scare you off! worth every penny!! Thanx Red Oxx for such a great product!!!
3 bags in one Serious Grip!
By Anonymous, Pittsburgh, July 13, 2013
... my first Red Oxx purchase. Couldn't be happier! I'm a Road Engineer NS and have been carrying a back pack, with clothes and books. Then a more traditional grip to carry my shave kit, shoes, and a portable under-the-desk folding "office bike". Plus a "green bag" from a supermarket to carry my lunch, tea, coffee, utensils, etc...
I googled Engineers Grip for a replacement... This was the only hit that knew what I was looking for. I now am able to carry all of the above in this one, super heavy duty grip! With room for more items. The thing i love the most, is the attention to detail. Every piece, from the zippers, the solid chrome hardware, the nifty knots on every zipper to make gettin in and out a snap. But above all the weight and quality of the ballistic nylon... I had a "Swiss" style grip that lasted 8 years and the nylon weave was half the weight of this.
These are great Americans putting these products together... Now I am confident on where to fulfill all of my travel needs/luggage. Lastly, the price is better than fair for the quality... People pay 3 times this for a designer Namesake, made elsewhere, and nowhere near the specialization or quality of Red Oxx.
By Nate, ontario, June 13, 2013
Right when put the grip in your hand u know u have something special. The quality is hands down the best on the market with loads of room for all your gear and still have room ledt over. Glad i was talked into buying this grip. One Happy Railroader :D
By John Hughes, Rhode Island, June 5, 2013
This bag is very practible. Built VERY TOUGH! Has a place for everything including my NORAC book and lantern. (The two odd ball things I have to have with me at all times).Has many places to carry small as well as large items. Zippers and snaps built TOUGH!!!! Very happy in every way.
By Jeff , Maryland, May 17, 2013
Was able to combine two bags into one and still have room left over. Overall I would liked it just a little bigger in each direction, the backpack was just too big for my taste. Bag seems solid and well made but the test of time will tell... Did not do it but would recommend getting the monogram since these are becoming popular.
By Jeff, Iowa, May 16, 2013
Just got my new railroad grip and already it surpassed my expectations. I've gone through 4 other railroad grips before and for the money this one you can't beat. The size is perfect to fit everything you need while on the rails. My only problem is along with others, is maybe just put 4 plastic knobs on the bottom for feet to protect the bottom. Other than that this bag is perfect!!
By Anonymous, Minnesota, April 30, 2013
The bag was on back order but it was well worth the wait, about 3 weeks to ship, but you get what you pay for. It's not some its not some cheap supermarket roll back priced bag. Never have I seen a bag built with such thick rugged material. I wish I would have heard about Red Oxx while I was in the military. It would have been a nice bag for the HMMWV's in the sand box. A real must have.
By Dan, Ohio, April 25, 2013
After coaxing from some fellow employees and frustration from cheaper grips, I have finally decided to get a Red Oxx. It arrived and wow is this thing built tough, I'm looking forward to 25 years of no new grip purchases. My only wish is that it was available in a slightly smaller version for those of us that don't carry as much.
By RD Teaford, Hinton, WV, April 25, 2013
Just received my bag and have used it for one trip. Good and useful bag for me as an engineer. All my rule books and required materials fit nicely in one end pocket and everything else I carry fit elsewhere. Nice heavy duty clips, zippers and bag overall. Would recommend to anybody looking for a good grip.
By Mark A. Marino, Massachusetts, April 20, 2013
While I do not work on a railroad, I am a heavy equipment operator who is on a differnt job site almost daily. This bag is tough and holds all the gear I need throuhout the day. Reference books, safety gear, rain gear, spare foul weather clothing and by food bag. Hopefully I will get more than a couple of years use out of this bag compared to the short life span of other grips.

Great product so far...very well made and great design.Ordering was super easy. One thing I would like to see would be some kind of feet on the bottom that would help the bottom of bag wear better from sliding on rough surfaces . Also a plastic box( with no lid) that is the same size as the middle compartment as an option would be nice . Hard to find one that fits well. Too bad my Company doesn't offer this bag instead of the backpacks they offer. Much superior product.
Love it, and agree with other reviewers
By Cliff, Saskatchewan, April 11, 2013
First of all, lovin' the grip Red Oxx. I knew I was getting a great product as other guys I work with have the same grip. As other conductors surely know, with all the stuff we carry in our bags, it gets pretty heavy. This bag is really standing up to the weight better than any other bag I've had.
I do agree with other reviewers though on a couple things. The bag could be just a hair longer and the review that stated having a place for pens and pencils was right on. Losing my pen and/or pencil when I need it the most for copying that clearance is nerve wracking.
But yea, Red Oxx really made a quality product on this and I'm proud the own one!
By R. Corkum, Manitoba, April 10, 2013
Have had this bag about 3 weeks. It is tough ,capable of carrying everything I need and more, Yet is small enough to not be in the way in the power. Was a little sceptical at the price but once I received this bag I knew it was money well spent. Awesome bag that feels like it will last. Only addition I would like to see is a quick release loop( Velcro) to hang my lantern on for quick access.
nice bag but should be two sizes
By Anonymous, Mandan,ND, April 7, 2013
Seems to be very sturdy with good zippers, but is A little to small.I wish it was four inches longer.Conductors have to carry more stuff than Engineers at most times and it gets pretty tight. So need to see them make different lengths.and also need A velcro strap on top for jackets.
By Matt, California, April 5, 2013
This grip is fantastic and extremely well made! You will find no other grip to top this! Even after filling it with my rule book, PPE, lantern, radio, keys, etc...the large middle compartment isn't even close to being half full! Definitely a must have for any railroader!
By John Waddell , Kcmo, April 5, 2013
What a great grip this is! If I could suggest, maybe a stitched spot for pens and maybe some Velcro separating walls for the Deep pockets this bag would Dominate!
By JDM, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, April 4, 2013
I waited a year before purchasing my grip. I watched the reviews, took measurements and wondered if it was going to be worth both the price, and buying it sight unseen. Let me assure you... There is no reason to worry!
The grip is my first RedOxx product, I found it by searching the Internet. The ordering process on-line was easy, and I also had my grip monogrammed. Although the website said it was back-ordered, UPS was at my door a week and a half later. The construction of the bag is heavy-duty. The best part is that the handle forms a continuous loop down the side and underneath the grip, so you don't have to worry about stitching letting go as the weight of the bag is supported, like a sling. The shoulder strap is also attached to the grip in a similar fashion. Out of the box, I was worried about not having enough room in the bag, but looks are deceiving. I was able to consolidate from carrying two bags down to one... with room to spare. If this bag can't do the job for you, you're likely carrying too much stuff anyhow. Yes, the bag can be awkward getting through doorways, but it's a locomotive... not a grand ballroom.
So far I'm 100% satisfied with my RedOxx grip, I should have made the purchase sooner. The grip has received numerous compliments for its design, looks and quality. Worth the investment!
It Pays to Buy Good Tools
By B.H.Foster, Indiana, April 2, 2013
Quality tools, while expensive up front, ultimately pay for themselves many times over during their life. Ultimately, this makes the cost of ownership very low indeed. This holds true for Red Oxx bags. They are tough.
No major surprises upon first looking at my new Railroad Grip. I already own a CPA Briefcase and a Beanos PR-4, so I knew what to expect in terms of overall quality and attention to detail. I am impressed with stoutness of the fabric, even though I knew it would be heavier than the other bags. The sizes in the website description don't tell the whole story, though. This bag can hold a lot of stuff.
The optional monogramming was hard to reconcile from a vanity standpoint, but I am glad I splurged. It looks GREAT! I anticipate many years of trouble-free service from this bag, based on my experiences with the ones I already own. Ask me again in 5 years, and I'll provide a follow up.

Finally got tired of the other bags breaking. Over the years you will be way ahead if you buy one with a lifetime warranty. Wish I would have done that (30) years ago!
By ejc, ohio, March 21, 2013
Should have rubber or plastic bottom but still a very good grip.
Center main compartment could be smaller. Grip a little too long for getting on/off engine. Should clear ladder rungs (shorten 4 inches).
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Grip compare to the Safari Beano's Duffel Bags?
The Grip is built using a heavier and stronger 1050 weight ballistic CORDURA® nylon, our toughest. Developed as a flak jacket material, it's an ideal soft-sided bag textile for Railroaders who endure the hardships of the rail line.
What is Ballistic CORDURA® Nylon?
Ballistic CORDURA® nylon is a thick, tough, synthetic nylon fabric used for a variety of applications. Ballistic nylon was originally developed by the DuPont corporation as a material for flak jackets to be worn by World War II airmen. The term 'ballistic' takes its name from the fact that it was intended to protect its wearers from flying debris and fragmentation caused by bullet or artillery shell impacts. This is a special grade heavier weight CORDURA® nylon designed for hard use and colored black to help hide dirt, oil, and grease stains.
What colors does the embroidery come in?
Embroidery is only available in red.
Can I get a Grip in a different color other than black?
Our U.S.A. sourced ballistic CORDURA® nylon is currently only available in black, which is also the best color to hide oil, dirt and grease stains.
Will my rulebook (US), radio, and trainman lantern fit inside?
Yes, the Grip was specifically designed to hold this particular railroader gear.
Is there a railroad discount available?
Red Oxx eliminates the middle man with our factory direct to consumer model
. Our prices are based on the length of time it takes to build a bag and the cost of materials. Each bag we build comes with our iron clad "No Bull", no questions asked Lifetime Warranty. You will save considerable money in the long run because you bought only one bag, not to mention peace of mind knowing you own a Railroad Grip that will not fail and if it does, it will be repaired or replaced at no charge to you.
My zipper broke. The teeth have separated. Do I send it in for warranty repair?
No need for warranty repair, try fixing it yourself. Check out this video where CEO Jim Markel shows how easy it is to do it yourself.
Is there a way to securely lock my Grip?
Sure, you can use any TSA approved bag lock
or try our Cable Lock
for a simple, semi-secure solution. Watch this video where CEO Jim Markel demonstrates how you can use the cable that comes with the product, the Dog Tag
price tag to secure your bag
. Keep in mind, any determined thief can still cut open a soft sided bag with a sharp knife.
Do you offer a loaner bag while my Grip is in for repair?
Sorry, we don't send out loaner bags. Generally turn around time is less than 72 hours.
Do you ship your Grip to Canada and how much does that cost?
Certainly, we ship to Canada for a fixed UPS Expedited or USPS Priority International shipping fee of only $30.00. All disbursement fees due on delivery are the responsibility of the buyer. Other International orders are $50.00, except Australia and New Zealand for only $55.00.
Can I write off my Grip on my taxes?
Certainly, we recommend that you keep your paper receipt which is included in the package and obtain IRS Tax Form 2016. Contact your income tax accountant or read here for more information on deductions for employee expenses here
Can you ship USPS?

DESIGNED BY RAILROADERS.
Red Oxx began hand building this duffel style Grip for locomotive railroad engineers here in Billings, Montana in 1992. Together with a group of five rail engineers and conductors, Red Oxx created an American-made trainman bag that could survive the rough rail life.
Designed with the help of these fellow engineers, conductors and train crew members at our local rail hub (Montana's largest), it's been tested tough to the extreme, making it the perfect rail work Grip. This bag is made out of our strongest material; 1050 heavy weight denier Ballistic CORDURA® Nylon (available only in BLACK). Originally developed as a flak jacket fabric in World War II, ballistic nylon is one of the strongest and durable flexible textiles available. Rugged, reliable and tough.
FITS YOUR RAIL GEAR.
Sized to fit the large GCOR rule book or tablet in one end pocket, your "Shiner" trainman lantern and radio in the other, you'll still have room for a week (or more) worth of clothes and your Red Oxx Nomad Shaving Kit in the cavernous main compartment. Speaking of clothes, check out our hanging and shoulder carry Laundro Bag for storing your dirty laundry. There are plenty of places to stow smaller things in the zippered flat pockets located on all sides of the duffel. Smaller items like pens and pencils should be stored in a pencil case so they don't knock around in your bag.
Our no questions asked "No Bull" Lifetime Warranty guarantees this'll be the last grip you'll ever have to buy! Why?
NO JUNK MATERIALS.
No skinny tiny plastic zippers, cheap thread or junky low-grade hardware like other rail Grips. Red Oxx uses huge, tested-tough #10 YKK VISLON® self-locking zippers that work every time, in every kind of weather, in any temperature. Easy to close, easy to open.
Our thread is a proprietary UV protected #92 bonded SolarMax Nylon that will cut your fingers off before you can break it. UV protection from the sun resists thread aging, a common breakdown point used in typical inferior bags. Since we're former military veteran parachute riggers, you can bet every stress point is double cross-stitched. The double XX being the source of our brand name, Red OXX.
PUTTING THE HARD IN HEAVY-DUTY HARDWARE.
When you see and feel the sheer heft our stainless steel and nickel-plated hardware you'll understand why so many railroaders swear by our Grips. Just check out over three hundred (300) product reviews from satisfied engineers, conductors, and trainmen who have tried them all, some of them have burned through several competitors' bags within a single year. Includes The Claw, our no-slip rubber padded adjustable shoulder carry strap.
BOUND AND BAGGED
Places where two separate pieces of fabric are stitched together are then bound, that is, we take a long piece of one-inch wide nylon webbing and fold it over the edges of the two pieces and stitch them together, this creates a strong seam, or binding, that prevents the pieces from unraveling on the inside of the bag, or gives it a clean finished look if on the outside of the Grip.
In addition, each exposed fabric edge, such as on a pocket flap, is also bound using a thicker binding material. Inside edges typically receive a thinner nylon webbing, whereas outside corner edges that are exposed to wear will have a thicker nylon binding. All of our binding material is vertically woven to prevent fraying, peeling or splitting that you may commonly see in competitors' Grips that brag of "binding" their edges.
Life on the tracks is hard. It's about steel, oil and hard sharp edges that cut and rip a regular bag to pieces. The Red Oxx Railroad Grip: "stronger than Armstrong."
NEED SOMETHING DIFFERENT?
Is a duffel style Grip not quite large enough for all your winter gear during a long haul? Try our Rail King II Railroad Rucksack. Too big? Need a shoulder carry backpack style bag that is more in tune with traveling light? Try our Rail Runner Railroad Rucksack.
Because an embroidered Grip is a respected grip. Order an Embroidered Monogram and make your Grip --yours. Available in red lettering only - located on top zipper panel only. Because there are many Grips out on the rails with owners names embroidered on their bags, it's a great idea to think up something a little more personal than just your name or initials. For example: perhaps a favorite nickname, pet name, TV show, band, game, animal, hero, car or truck, team, aircraft and so on. Something entirely unique to you.
- Three initials for only $7.50.
- Up to ten characters (including spaces, dashes and periods) for only $10.00.
*NOTE: Custom Embroidered Monogramming your grip adds an additional 2-3 business days before shipping.
