I bought this bag for my wife and a girlfriend as an everyday purse after they looked at it online. I already own the railroad duffel bag and the tri-fold shaving kit bags and knew all about the quality of your products. Needless to say, they are both incredibly happy with it. It holds all the useless crap that women have to carry in their purses and still has room left over to hold stuff they are handed by our kids.
After talking to both of them, they would absolutely buy another one (or several) in various colors and would recommend these to other women. According to them, the only thing that would make this bag better would be a checkbook wallet that matches the color of the bags. In short, they love these bags.

The Chica was a last minute purchase before a trip to Guatemala. I had been traveling with the Air Boss and was impressed with the design and construction. When the Chica arrived I thought it was too big. I put it back in the box disappointed with my impulsive purchase. Long story short...the bag went to Guate with me and is now my favorite travel bag.
It was designed to perfection. Just enough pockets to be useful but not too many that you lose track of where you put things. I wore the shoulder strap across my body so the bag was always secure against my body and my hands were free.
I had everything I needed for the day including rain jacket and bottled water. The bag that I initially thought looked too big never felt cumbersome. My search for the perfect day bag is over.

Great bag for women or men
By Elizabeth, Berkeley, CA, October 18, 2012
I've used this bag every day since I received it. I am extremely pleased. I was looking for a durable, everyday purse with a cross-the-chest strap that could be shortened to a shoulder strap. I wanted a durable material but didn't want the weight of leather. The Chica is exactly as described.
I like the way the strap is attached to the bag; it doesn't twist because there are no d-rings. The front zipper pocket is perfect for my cell phone, keys, and little odds and ends that I want quick access to. The pocket with the snap is good for snacks, earphones, lists. The main compartment holds my camera, wallet, scarf, 18 oz water bottle, etc. I'm sure I'll use the slot pocket towards the back at some point for separating things.

I've had my Chica about 3 months. I had to revise my expectations of what and how to pack the Chica. One reason I bought the Chica, is that I will eventually get a tablet computer. Right now my Nook stands in for the tablet.
For folks that lamented the lack of a key clip, may I suggest the handy wire ring that comes with the dog tag? I strung the ring around the metal clip holding the strap. Et Voila! My keys do not drop into the bag. I bought pencil bags to segregate my gear, much nicer than digging through a bag. I take my Chica everywhere and it still does not show wear.
There are a ton of pockets and ways to arrange the Chica to meet your needs. Experiement!

Good, but not without flaws
By Anonymous, Texas, September 16, 2012
I bought this bag a few months ago. Now that I've had it awhile and have used it quite a bit, I finally feel comfortable writing a real review.
I love Red Oxx products. They really hold up to abuse and look good doing it. They are even "Autism Tough," which isn't easy to find.
I bought this bag for me, to be used in travel--specifically to Walt Disney World. I needed something that would be easy to carry, use and would hold a lot. I always need essentials for my ASD son, my toddler and still wind up with things for/from my other 2 boys and husband. I didn't want to look or feel like a pack mule. I also wanted something that was OK for water rides and sudden downpours. In this, The Chica fit the bill perfectly.
I've been also using it for when I was working day camp during the summer and for many day trips/festivals. I am mostly happy with it.
I am able to toss in my phone, my iPad, rain ponchos, small books, water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, digital camera, pocket camcorder, baby wipes, noise cancelling headphones, wallet and many other miscellaneous items with ease--depending where I am at or what I need (almost all those things at once when at Disney).
Where The Chica failed: I found the strap did slide a bit. I am on the look out for a way to slip something around it for a bit more comfort, but really, it's not something I noticed too terribly. I do wish the straps were removable. I kept losing my iphone. There is an interior pocket, but my phone kept getting lost. I'd like a small smartphone pocket that is easy to reach. This is not a deal breaker though. I really wish there was a side pocket on each side for a water bottle. I ended up attaching a carabiner that has a water bottle clip, but it moves around and hits me which is uncomfortable. This is close to a deal breaker, as I find this a big need and inconvenience. The BIG problem though, is the rubbing. For the most part, it lays as any crossbody bad lies and is quite comfortable. However, what I have noticed is that the super-tough material rubs against my clothes. When I returned from Disney, I realized I had ruined several shirts. In that 5 day trip, I probably ruined $300 worth of clothes. My use is now limited to when I am wearing clothes I don't care about (day camp "uniform" t-shirts), if I will have a stroller that I can toss it into or any other time that I will not have it on my person for 14 hours a day.

Update - Awesome Addition
By GaylM, Canada, September 2, 2012
Thought I'd add to my original posting as I've now done 2 train trips with my Chica & it is as good as I'd hoped. I find that I use these reviews a lot to make decisions so I wanted to let people know some details of this bag.
I fit my iPad, with a protective sleeve, in the back slot of the main compartment with a bit of a squeeze but nothing that would endanger the iPad - it is more that my sleeve is a little bulky. On its own, the iPad slides easily into the slot.
In the rest of the main compartment, I was able to put all the cords & extras that I travel with (chargers, headphones, extra [large] battery for apple gear, small purse, scarf & large metal water bottle). There's a small zippered section in the front of the main section which is where I transferred my passport to for safety when I was through security/customs.
Under the front flap (which ingeniously snaps at the bottom to the rest of the bag) is another section that has a middle snap & is perfect for easy access to snack bars, kleenex, chapstick, etc...
The front flap has a zipper for quick access to your tickets & id. I found it the perfect place for my iPhone, as well.
This bag is extremely well thought out. It's more stylish than the gator bag & that's what I wanted. If I was going on a trip where I would be roughing it more then the gator bag would be my preference.
Personally, I don't want water bottle holders at the end of this bag. It would be neat to have some sort of an add-on for water bottles that would attach, look like part of the bag, but that you could put on or off as you need - I would be all over that. I sort of like the idea of a back slot but I also know, from experience, that items tend to disappear more easily & so I much prefer the front zippered section on the front flap.
I can't think of much more that I would want for this bag. It's about as perfect as can be, for my needs. I do like the idea of an add-on water bottle holder though....hmmmm.....

This is the perfect bag. It is extremely well made, fits my "look", and is the perfect size for all my purse items plus a book. I use it everyday and love it!

I purchased this along with my Sky Train and Nomad bags, but didn't take it on my first journey. I like the size for carrying multiple small to medium size items that would otherwise be hard to manage.
It fits my first generation iPad perfectly, and still has room for a smaller frame camera and whatever else one might need to have handy. I look forward to using it. The only caveat is the lack of a light-colored lining to make things easier to see. I would also add a small carry handle and small pad on the shoulder strap.
By GaylM, Canada, July 18, 2012
I was pleasantly surprised, for several reasons, when I recently received my new Chica. I had ordered it in a khaki color (which I assumed was a beige color) but it appears more of a really light green - which I love because it looks great with my olive Skytrain, CPA computer bag & market tote. Also, it was larger than I had envisioned - not too large - but definitely bigger.
It will definitely hold my iPad & other gear when I'm travelling. I'm taking several train trips in the next few months and I can't wait to try this newest addition out. Of course, all of the other Red Oxx gear comes with me - I have travelled everywhere with it the last few years & received numerous compliments & questions about it.

Purchased for recent trip to europe.
Pros:
Great for air travel with easy access to front zip pocket for tickets, passport, boarding pass, etc.
Snaps are good, but wish it had a zipper to main compartment, and another zip compartment on the back of the bag. Kept everything necessary for multi security check points with ease.
Cons:
too big and bulky for everyday travel trips.
All in all, good for long hauls, dashing through airports. Cross body is a plus.
Would not use as every day bag. Very utilitarian in appearance.

I got this as a late-Spring, Summer, early-Fall commuter bag. I also agree with the suggestions others have made for modifications. I would also suggest making the strap the same design as that for the Gator. That said, I think it currently functions much better than most messenger bags. I am using the end loops as a place to carry sunglasses and the flap tabs by the front flap zip pocket make good pen/stylus holders. Note--this bag is not really wide or deep enough to carry files--at least not without crushing or crumpling them.
By Richard, Doha, Qatar, May 24, 2012
I bought this bag in the hope that it would do 2 things--carry my lunch to work, and hold a set of headphones and all the other clutter while travelling. It does the second and will certainly do the first. On top of all, it really does feel strong enough to be used to fell a bag snatcher. Well done all.
PS I wouldn't object to a phone pocket, but it isn't something I'd die in a ditch over.

Request rather than review
By lps, New York, April 20, 2012
I second the requests others have made, including pocket for iPhone and bottle-pockets on the ends. Ideal configuration would be: bottle pockets, both ends; slip pocket across full width of the BACK, with phone pocket inside the *back* pocket. Phone pocket should be large enough for the monster-size phones out there. With iPhones (in particular) being 'Apple picked" out of users' hands, an exterior phone pocket, especially on the end of the bag that would be furthest behind me, is a non-starter. As a pocket-inside a pocket in the back, it would be 1) well-hidden yet 2) accessible on the fly. Pretty-please??

This is my second Chica bag. I gave the first one to my husband (along with my old iPad) when I got my new iPad. I love this bag. It's roomy but not bulky. Even with my iPad and accessories it's not heavy. Fits easily over the shoulder or as a cross body bag. The inside sections are big enough to hold my essentials but not too big where things get lost. And I love that the iPad slides right into the back inside pocket, even with a cover, as if the bag were made for it. I would not hesitate to buy another bag if I needed to. My husband loves his too!

This bag looks to be well made and would probably be great for a day of touring, but it is way too utilitarian looking to be my every day purse.
By Tim , Miami Beach, March 20, 2012
I work as a bartender. This bag is excellent for caring what I need, to and from work. The build quality is far above any bag I have owned in the past. Thank you Red Ox for such a good price / value product.
By Dee, CT, January 28, 2012
I received this product recently so I have not used it for traveling yet. I was split between the Gary Gator and Chica. I'm looking for something to handle my travel needs, not too bulky and smaller than the Gator. This fits the exact things I carry but I will not be able to drop a few extras in. Again I will see how it works when I travel.
By Jarrett Dorough, Connecticut, January 17, 2012
My wife was looking for a small carry bag to use as a purse for our honeymoon. I bought her a Chica and it quickly became indispensable. It went everywhere we did serving as a camera bag, doggy bag, to just about anything else we needed bag. A very versatile quality product!

Love the bag, hate the name
By Jay Lukowski, Atlanta, December 15, 2011
I used to carry a big briefcase but when I started using my iPad I needed a small bag. The Chica is perfect; my iPad fits well and there is room for the few things I need to schlep around. I would definately recommend. But, I think you should ditch the feminine name. What about neutering the name and morphing it into Chico/a.
By Anne C., Pittsburgh, PA, October 27, 2011
I was disappointed in how this looks and returned it. I'm a big fan of Red Oxx (love the Air Boss!!), and I think the Chica is extremely well made. But it just won't work as my daily purse -- it looks too much like a camera bag.
