I have had this bag for only a few weeks but on the 3 trips that I have been on I can tell that it is extremely well designed and built.
• Appreciate the weight saving and extra room that you get without the wheel assembly that was on my old carry-on bag
• It easily fits in the smaller overhead compartments of the regional jets saving the aggravating process of waiting for your checked luggage on the jet way
• Allows you to effortlessly maneuver up escalators and stairways
• Zippers are super heavy duty
• The 3 main compartments are far superior for packing your clothes and gear than the single large compartment of the typical wheeled carry-on. The smaller exterior compartments provide easy access for miscellaneous items such as magazines and your passport
• Agree with another reviewer that I am not a fan of the double snaps on the handle or the single snap on the exterior compartment. Opening them was fine but closing them for some reason was always more of a challenge than it should have been - Velcro would be an improvement for both.
---------- Red Oxx replies: thanks for the great review, tips and ideas Bill. The reason we don't use Velcro on our bags because it wears out quickly and becomes a "warranty issue" -- thereby an annoying hassle for you and an unprofitable expense for us. We've found that once you get used to the snaps you can work them relatively quickly.

Good bag. I replaced a wheeled Rick Steves bag with the Air Boss after getting a packing light education at one bag.com. I kind of like slinging a single bag over a shoulder!

I'm so grateful for your advice. I've been a believer in principle, but now I am in practice. Let me explain. I've been reading OneBag.com and have had it bookmarked for several years. I've implemented some of the techniques piecemeal, primarily because I had an old rolling carry-on and just couldn't justify buying a new one when this one wouldn't die. Nevertheless, I've coveted the Red Oxx Air Boss for about three years now.
Well, my roller finally did die on a recent trip. And I bought a black Air Boss before I could talk myself out of it.
The challenge was convincing my wife that "no wheels" was a good idea. We have two little boys: one almost three, the other a year-and-a-half. It was a hard task, but I convinced her to let me try it for our upcoming nine-day family vacation to Maui.
It was an amazing experience.
I know people abuse the word "amazing", but I mean it here. My packing was easy and extremely organized, I did not over-pack, I had room for [EDIT: all my clothes], almost all the kids' clothes, two iPads, a MacBook Air, accessories, and the bag was still light enough to carry. Bundle wrapping was perfect. My wife had one carry-on, duffle-style bag too.
Now, we were traveling with toddlers, so we were not 100% one-bag, but the extras were only a small bag for food and a diaper bag. We carried on everything but the car seats.
My wife was totally impressed with how well it worked, and we packed about 1/3 to 1/2 less "stuff" then we packed last year when we went. More importantly, we did not "go without" anything, or feel like we had forgotten something at home that we needed/wanted.
I cannot tell you enough how grateful I am for your advice, how pleased I am with the results, and how simple my travel has really become.

I am very particular about my travel luggage and have spent the last 18 months trying various options mainly the wheeled variety settling on a hand baggage sized roller. However I still felt that wheeled luggage was too restrictive, especially once leaving the airport.
I finally stumbled across the onebag.com website which advocates a similar ethos to the path I was heading down, that being reducing everything carried to essentials and keeping mobile.
The Airboss bag recommended seemed really well made and well thought out bit of kit. I managed to find a mint condition example on eBay and purchased it. It arrived and has been used for a few trips and I couldn't be happier with.
Very comfortable to carry, very well designed and constructed. I can fit a weeks sensibly chosen business clothing and travel kit without a problem. I use a foldable messenger bag as laptop bag for meetings once I get to my destination, this takes up little room in the centre compartment, not being bulky. I have changed the shoulder strap for an Optech curved Neoprene version, this increases the comfort levels compared to the original strap, a slight tweak to an otherwise perfect bag. The Airboss is well recommended!

Best bag on the planet, worth spending more than I'd planned. Everytime I start my packing process and think "this is not all going to fit", it does. The design, material qualities are superb, right down to the monkey fists! If you're hesitant about pulling the trigger on this back, relax and do it. You won't regret it!
By Ed, Chile, October 20, 2014
This is a fantastic bag, I love the design and the materials, it could be a little big for some Airlines outside of the US to be used as a carry on.
By Chris, Houston, TX, October 16, 2014
Love this bag. For years I'd been doing the 20" roller bag + laptop bag for business travel. Thought nothing of it, until a buddy of mine in the office mentioned that he "one bags" it with a backpack. I wasn't wild about the backpack option but intrigued about having one bag, so my search began. I spent a few weeks researching even trying various options. Actually purchased 3 other competitor offerings, but upon receiving all had something that was a deal killer. I should have just saved myself a lot of time and ordered the Air Boss first.
Pros and Cons:
- Build-quality is beyond solid. Never seen zippers this stout and the Money Fist knots are not just a gimmick, they really add to both the function and style.
- Fits an unbelievable amount of stuff. I broke the Air Boss in on a 2-week trip to Bulgaria. I traveled with my wife and 2.5 year old girl. I was determined to get all of my stuff into the Air Boss. I succeeded, but dang was it heavy (I'm 6'1", 192 pounds and in good shape). My shirts are all XL so this likely contributed to overall weight. Obligatory packing list (I used a combination of Eagle Creek folders/cubes): 7 days underwear & socks (we had access to washer/dryer); 1 pair jeans; 1 pair khakis; 2x long sleeve button down dress shirts; 2x golf/polo shirts; 2x khaki shorts; 1x bathing suit; 7x short-sleeved t-shirts; 1x long-sleeved t-shirt; rain/windbreaker jacket; 1 pair jogging shoes; 1 pair dress shoes; 1 pair workout shorts; travel bible; leather-bound journal; iPad Mini; toiletry bag.
In retrospect I could have trimmed this a bit, but weather was going to be variable and this was my first time to Europe.
Again, the story here is how much the Air Boss will hold, but the moral of the story is that just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean you should! I really think the "sweet spot" for this bag is a 2-5 day trip. Which is pretty much what it is advertised for.
It was fairly brutal lugging this thing through the Amsterdam airport to a connecting flight (my fault, not the bag's). On the return trip the Air Boss served as the "essentials" bag for my wife, daughter, and my stuff, and everything else was checked.
But my next use of the bag will be for a 3-night men's retreat, and the Air Boss will be perfect for this. Suit will go in one side (for when we come back for mass on Sunday), "street clothes" on other side, and toiletries, books, etc in the middle. Just a great setup.
- Easy access. I love how the zippers allow you to open the whole bag up and lay flat to pack/unpack.
- Great style. I picked Midnight Blue and couldn't be happier. For those concerned about looking professional, you'll be fine.
Though these are fairly minor, I believe the bag could be improved upon in these areas:
- Handle: I'm not a fan of the snap closure. It just takes a concentrated effort to snap the handle back together if you have to open. I think a Velcro closure would work better here. It was most annoying/cumbersome in the airport due to having to get passports for my family out. Which leads me to my second and related suggestion:
- Zipper pocket access. I love how the back is not overly-engineered with too many pockets, etc. However I don't like how the main exterior zippered pocket requires you to undo the handle to access. I kept all passports/travel documents in a folder within this large zippered pocket. There were times where I was repeatedly having to get into this pocket, either to access the passports or get the travel documents to see the flight number, etc. There is a small, deep pocket on the other side that does not require the handles to be opened, but this was too narrow and deep to serve as a passport/travel document pocket. I just ended up stuffing receipts in there.
- Interior pocket. While I agree with the philosophy that "less is more" when it comes to pockets and such, it would be nice to have at least one zippered pocket on the interior. I would put it in the center section, which would prevent the user from having to remember "which side is that interior pocket on".
- Lack of a D/O-Ring: I bought the one on the Red Oxx site, but then basically had to decide where I wanted to punch a hole in my bag to install (I chose one of the compression straps). I think one of these should be engineered into the design.
Again these are relatively minor issues, but significant enough to prevent me from awarding a full 5 stars (if I could give it a 4.5, I would, because aside from these issues the bag is that good).
- Padding on center section bottom. I've read other reviews that have called for this, but not a big deal to me as I have a leather sleeve for my laptop.
In summary, I highly recommend this bag. Again I think the sweet spot is exactly for what it is advertised, a 2-5 day business or personal trip. One of the reasons I decided on this bag though is its versatility. I travel and do work outside, so needed something flexible to hold a winter coat and some gear, but also work for a weekend trip in the summer. I'm looking forward to using it on the retreat I mentioned, and business travel.
---------- Red Oxx replies: thanks for the tips and ideas. Have you considered using a Red Oxx Nomad or Lil Roy as a packing cube? Your Air Boss will thank you.

Air Boss is the Best Bag Ever!!! I've traveled over 800,000 air miles and bought dozens of bags over the past 5 years trying to find the right one. I've wasted at least $2,000 trying different rollers, duffle, back-packs, and garment bags as well as well as using combinations of roller bags and laptop cases or backpacks to fit all my stuff... This ONE bag does sit all!! This is my 3rd trip using it bag. It easily swallows up a 2 week business trip (1 wash only) to Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong; I was able to take along 2 suits, 5 dress shirts, 5 casual shirts, toiletries, under garments for 8 days , sneakers, shorts, jeans, bathing suit, plus a laptop. Got stopped twice by other travelers who knew the Red Oxx Bag by name but I was the first person they ever saw with it. They were surprised on how much stuff I told I could fit in it and then shocked them when I opened it up and showed 'em... It gets two thumbs up from me and maybe even two new customers! It fit in every overhead or under seat I encountered. I was able to navigate around crowds, into cabs, trains, buses, ferries, up stairs, around slow pokes on people movers, escalators and was able to quickly get to the front of every immigration line and zipped through customs without a second look. The shoulder strap is awesome! It does NOT slide off, you can relax your shoulder when using it, no need to hold your shoulder up in your ear like other bags which was my biggest fear to make the switch. I wish I purchased it 2 years ago when I first discovered it.... Stop procrastinating and just buy it already!
By Tony Fulcher , Central Virginia , October 9, 2014
This is a great bag. You can pack a lot of items in it and it fit the smaller airlines baggage compartments. The shoulder strap doesn't slide off your shoulder as advertised. The zippers stay secured in place as well. I will be ordering another bag with a different color soon. Thanks for the great bag!
By Dan, Boston, MA - USA, September 30, 2014
This is my go to bag for all travel! I travel for work, and pleasure and this is the only bag I use. I can fit a week's trip in without issue, and have the safety of having all my things with me, and still be able to open doors and walk stairs. For shorter weekend trips I've been known to pack my son's and my cloths etc, which makes keeping track of everything easier too. Great bag Red Oxx, my only worry is that the bag will last forever and I won't be a repeat customer!
By BK, Carlisle, KY, September 18, 2014
What a great bag, took it on one trip so far, packs well, looks awesome, makes me look better when walking through the airport.
By H L Chan, Singapore, September 18, 2014
All the videos on the advantages and merits of the Air Boss carry-on bag, well, they are true. I bought an Air Boss recently and used/tested it from Singapore to Chiang Mai and having to change plane at Bangkok. It was a breeze going through all the airport checks and not having to wait at the baggage carousel felt really good.
By Frazer, Auckland, New Zealand, September 16, 2014
I used my Airboss (in conjunction with a checked bag) on a one month trip to the UK, Morocco, Spain and Portugal. I wasn't traveling light. I love this bag, the quality is amazing and it's very versatile. The bag is almost too big for a checked in companion. When fully loaded, it can be quite heavy, but not one airline gave it a second glance as my carry on bag. As a single bag option its the only one you'll ever need!
Thoroughly happy with my purchase! The Air Boss is about to be tested on a 6 week working trip to Papa New Guinea by a relative. I know it'll pass with flying colours!
I'll also add a Safari PR4 to my luggage options.
Thanks Red Oxx!

When I landed a new job teaching micro enterprise principles in developing countries I knew it was the perfect justification to finally get the Red Oxx gear that I had been lusting after. The Air Boss and Gator were all that everyone said they were and more. I carried everything I needed for a two week trip to Cuba and Colombia in those two bags with plenty of room to spare, including all my teaching materials. The best part was bypassing the luggage carousel when I landed in Toronto at the end of the trip knowing that my wife was waiting. I'm looking forward to many future trips to Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
The Air Boss stayed on my shoulder through the airports, although as others have noted it can get heavy. Well worth it to avoid checking a bag.
I have no regrets about my purchase and recommend Red Oxx to all who will listen.

Spent three weeks in china the air boss was a godsend 7 flights In 3 weeks and everyone I just walked off the plane no luggage collection all in the overhead storage only once was I asked to luggage check it due to the plane being packed and I was one of the last on the plane. Packed one suit with waste coat pair of boots for hiking and 7 set of cloths that could be mix together so appeared wearing something different each day and still had room for more stuff. I was over the weight capacity but nobody checked as it's the right size to take on board very happy and pleased with the boss
By Bill from Cardiff, Cardiff California, August 28, 2014
I have owned this bag for a little over 2 months and have logged 6 trips with it ranging from overnight to 4 days. It's now my favorite piece of luggage and does everything I want it to do. I describe it as the Swiss watch of luggage with all of the packing possibilities. I use the Eagle Creek pack system for dress and casual shirts and they fit just fine.
It's so nice that I can feel so goos about made in America!
----------- Red Oxx replies: thanks for the compliments, have you tried using a Red Oxx Nomad or Lil Roy as a packing cube? Your Air Boss will thank you.

I am a busy entrepreneur and NEVER take time to write reviews... except for this one time. .. Cause the Airboss is AWESOME! One of the best purchases I have ever made in my life. Makes traveling so convenient and easy. The bundle technique is awesome and works well for suits. Initially was worried but everything turned out great. I've already posted on social media and told thousands about this awesome bag already. I highly recommend it
By Lungs McGee, Mining Country, Australia, August 6, 2014
So, shortly after I purchased the Air Boss, Red Oxx invited me to leave a review. I thought "Hold your horses, I gotta try it out first...". Here I am, 8 months later, reading reviews that people have left after owning this bag for 5 years! Well sorry, I can't wait. I've had this bag for 8 months, I can't wait any longer.
This bag is the real deal. I'm a fly in fly out coal miner in Australia, and most of my stuff stays at a mining camp. Still, being away for a couple of weeks at a time requires certain necessities, and without wanting to waste time checking baggage, these necessities all have to fit in my carry on. This is where the Air Boss comes up trumps. If I can fit it into the Air Boss, I'll get it into the overhead locker, even on the regional carriers I usually fly with. I've lost count of the times I've seen travellers struggling to get a "regulation size” hard case into the overhead locker on a small plane, while in truth it's probably half empty. My Air Boss is always full, and always fits.
I have to be honest though, when I first received this bag, I thought "where are all the pockets?". Think about it, every bag you buy these days has a million little pockets for this and that. You feel obliged to fill them with something, so in reality the luggage company is saying "Hey, you need these pockets, fill them with something useful, or something not useful, but fill them!".
The Air Boss is a fairly simple bag, a bit ordinary looking even, though very well made. However, it puts you back in charge of how your bag is packed. I get more into my Air Boss than I have ever gotten into any other carry on bag. The best thing is, however full it is, it doesn't look like a monster bag that will be picked out as oversized carry on. Unless I start travelling on steam ships with an entourage of servants, I don't think I'll ever need another bag.
One of the reasons I held off for a while posting this review was to see how well it held up physically. After 8 months of hard Australian outback commuting, I'm kinda surprised. I reckon it's gonna take a few more years to wear this bag out, and I can see now why folks are posting reviews after 5 years of ownership.
In 5 years, if I'm not rich, retired and travelling with an entourage of servants, I'll let you know how my Air Boss is going. Don't hold your breath though, I'll probably be just saying "Yep, still going".
The Air Boss is a legend amongst bags.
By Deborah Meehan, Illinois, July 28, 2014
Fell in love with this bags look and the idea of packing light. Actually used it for the first time and it is even better than expected. It holds nice amount and stays light. Must be careful not to overpack. Love it!
By Janise, El Paso, July 24, 2014
I am a seasoned traveler who hates to check my bags! The Air Boss traveled beautifully, was easily accessible to pull out necessary items, stored perfectly in the overhead bin, and was a breeze to carry through the airport. In fact, I brought home extra clothing that I had not worn, in spite of changing outfits at least daily. The Air Boss is undoubtedly the best made and easiest carry-on I have owned!

Now you can pack and still be organized when you build your very own custom Red Oxx Packing Cube Kit.
Designed with three large main compartments, the Air Boss carry-on bag also features two outside zippered slip pockets; one full-length, one for your airline tickets, and an outside sleeve pocket for magazines, files, or a tablet. Inside the Air Boss are two outer compartments that each have buckled adjustable tie-downs inside to keep your belongings, or packing cubes, held in position and wrinkle-free until you unpack at your destination.
A SPACIOUS PLACE FOR YOUR TRAVEL BELONGINGS.
The center compartment is spacious enough to hold your Toiletries, extra shoes, work-out gear, business briefcase, etc. Volara closed-cell foam padding is sewn into the sides, so you've got a rigid, yet flexible, piece of carry-on luggage that still protects your valuable belongings.
A UNIQUE CARRY STRAP THAT NEVER SLIPS OFF.
Includes detachable padded nonslip Claw Shoulder Strap that keeps your bag where you want it - on your shoulder.

Watch the Air Boss Packing Video posted here as Red Oxx Ambassador Kasey Austin from Austin Adventures shows how to best use many of the bag's thoughtful features.
PROTECTION FOR YOUR LAPTOP.
Looking for extra protection for your laptop? A neoprene laptop sleeve is recommended. A "macho" option is to put it in a Metro Briefcase, which will then fit in the center compartment of the Air Boss, adding further protection and giving you a "one bag" travel option...with two bags inside one.
However, please be aware that this can become a very heavy bag to carry if you decide to try this! To accommodate the extra weight try adding a second Claw Shoulder Strap and then carrying the Air Boss "backpack style" (one strap over each shoulder). This can help offset the added load. See Photos tab for how this is done.
SIX REASONS TO OWN A RED OXX AIR BOSS:
1. A RELIABLE BUSINESS TRAVEL BAG BUILT LIKE A TANK.
Our fans like to define our gear as "built like a tank". While obviously you're not going to be toting around bags that weigh 50 tons and have three inches of armor plate, still the comparison is valid. For a soft sided carry-on bag, the American made Air Boss is built tough. Starting with the most durable, flexible, and practical textile material available -- 1000 weight CORDURA® Brand Nylon, the Air Boss is built using super-strong UV-resistant thread that's stitched into every seam. Rugged, reliable and tough.
2. BOUND AND BAGGED = STURDY SEAMS.
Places where two separate pieces of fabric are stitched together are then bound -- that is, we take a long piece of one-inch wide nylon webbing and fold it over the edges of the two pieces and stitch them together, this creates a strong seam, known as a binding, that prevents the pieces from unraveling on the inside of the bag, and gives it a clean, finished look on the outside of the bag.
3. BINDING INSIDE / BINDING OUTSIDE, NEVER UNRAVELS.
In addition, each exposed outside fabric edge, such as on a pocket flap, is also bound using a thicker binding material. Inside edges typically receive a thinner nylon webbing, whereas outside corner edges that are exposed to heavy wear have a thicker nylon binding. All of our binding material is vertically woven to prevent the fraying, peeling or splitting that you may commonly see in competitors carry-on bags that brag of "binding" their edges.
4. WHY DOUBLE BOX STITCHING?
Each stress point, such as where the handles attach to the bag, is double box stitched for unbreakable strength - which is where we get the "double XX" in our name, Red OXX; a stitching practice we adapted from our experience as parachute riggers.
5. MY, WHAT BIG ZIPPERS YOU HAVE!
The reason Red Oxx uses the largest practical zipper available, the #10 YKK VISLON® zipper, is that they're easily repairable, even in the field; they will hold their place, that is, they "lock"; they are difficult to penetrate, thereby increasing the security of your belongings from casual theft; they function smoothly in inclement weather, and they can be yanked from a variety of angles without losing teeth or becoming separated.
6. PUTTING THE HARD IN HARDWARE.
Red Oxx has occasionally been accused of "overdoing" our hardware. But once you've had a cheap piece of imported plastic "hardware" break in the middle of a busy intersection, airport or other inconvenient locale dumping your precious belongings all over the ground for everyone to see (and steal), having a heavy-duty nickel-plated or stainless steel D ring or attachment swivel that weighs just a tiny bit more, or might be a little "jingly", is a travel companion's confidence builder and peace-of-mind maker. After all, you want to enjoy your journey as best you can. Why worry about having your favorite carry-on travel bag bust apart and break you down?
