Climb mountains.

An Expedition Outfitter's Bag with world-class experience.

Design input from world-class climber Dr. Jean Ellis combined with our parachute-rigging bag-building techniques helped to create for you an expedition bag to take climbing or outfitting gear anywhere. Proven on all 7 continents, you'll thank us a thousand times over for the heavy-duty grab loops on both ends and the tough 1050 weight Ballistic Nylon skid plate on the bottom, plus Neoprene Rubber padding for that extra bit of protection.

Storm flap across the main compartment keeps out whatever Mother Nature sends your way, while 2 full-length side flat pockets keep your flat necessities like maps, light jackets, etc., accessible. The Sherpa is popular with the sheep hunting crowd as you can cram it full of camp equipment and bulky clothing, yet still easily carry the bag over treacherous terrain.

One of the hurdles with an outfitter's expedition duffel bag this big is carrying it once you've filled it up. The answer? Retractable padded backpack straps hidden inside a false bottom. This allows you 6 different and convenient methods to carry the Sherpa Jr.

1. Carry it by the top handle.
2. Carry it by both end handles.
3. Carry it with one end handle.
4. Carry it on your back with the retractable backpack straps.
5. Carry it with The Claw Nonslip Shoulder Strap.
6. Let a real sherpa carry it for you.

Heavy-duty features abound: Dual full wraparound 2" wide nylon webbing compression straps mean your bottom will never tear out. The carry handles also fully wrap around the bag, effectively doubling up the no rip carry strength. Double box stitched seams protect all stress points. Overbuilt 360 degree swivel "claws" will never rust or rip free. Nickel plated hardware more suited to a Mack Truck than an outfitter's bag!

Rectangular shape means you can really stuff this bag to the hilt. The Sherpa Jr. Outfitters Expedition Duffel Bag is sized to fit into the luggage hatch of a puddle jumper, such as a Cessna 182, the most common remote wilderness access aircraft. Now you know why Red Oxx calls it a Sherpa!
Dimensions: 27"L x 15"W x 15"H (fits in Cessna 182 storage).
Capacity: 6,075 cu. Inches.

Pocket measurements:

  • Dual exterior flat full-length zippered pockets: 12" D x 26.5"L
  • Bottom strap flap storage pocket (non-zippered): 21"L x 17"W
  • Main compartment: 26.5"L x 14.5"W x 14.5"H

"No Bull" Lifetime Warranty.

 Great Bag!
By Daniel L., NC, February 21, 2013

Top notch bag - first trip was skiing - got 3 family members gear all in this bag. I will continue to purchase Red Oxx gear...

 Sherpa, stuff it full
By Mike Z, Michigan, September 28, 2012

I used the Sherpa Jr. on a caribou hunting trip to Quebec. I was prepared for cold, warm and wet hunting so my bag was full-full. Its amazing how much you can stuff in there. Having handles all over the place made it easier to load on multiple float plane transfers off floating docks and rocky shorelines. The zippers are very durable and look like they'll last forever. I'm not too sure about the usefullness of the gator strap. With a full load you would not want this bag on your shoulders.

 Solid Bag
By Andrew, Alexandria, VA, August 23, 2012

The Sherpa Jr. Expedition Series bag was my second purchase from Red Oxx. Because I was very satisfied with my first purchase, the Air Boss, I knew that I would also love this bag. I have traveled everywhere with my Air Boss and it works and looks great after 2+ years of frequent multi-modal travel. I don't understand why anyone would buy luggage from any other company.

 Perfect for Small Cruise
By Scott, Dallas, TX, June 15, 2012

I bought this bag specifically for a trip that my wife and I were making to Alaska. The trip was for two weeks and included a cruise as well as a trip to the interior, Denali National Park. Two weeks worth of clothes, covering a variety of climates, plus multiple pairs of shoes, including my new pair of XTRATUF boots, the Alaskan tennis shoe, fit comfortably into this bag. It was easy to store in the small cabin on the cruise, as well as the bus into the park. It's the only bag I took, other than my Roadster Mini Ruck Rucksack Sack of course, and I was well within my weight limits.

 Great bag!
By Lady traveler, Florida, January 5, 2012

I used this as a checked bag on a recent week-long trip to Europe and was very pleased. It had plenty of room, actually more than I needed (used in addition to the skytrain and the gator for carry-ons), and the total weight fully-packed fell well within the airline's weight restrictions. As we were on a rivership with a tiny stateroom, its compact quality allowed me to stash it easily. Because the compression straps allow one to smoosh it down if it's not fully packed, I believe I could easily use it as a carry-on as well. Highly recommended!

 Sherpa Jr Weight
By OlympicRef, Washington, July 14, 2011

I was very impressed with the quality of the bag. However, I was quite surprised and disappointed with the weight of the bag. It is so heavy that I suspect very little can be placed in the bag and still stay within the airline weight limits. Consequently, it is far less functional than I had hoped.

 Everything it appears to be
By Brix, Nomadic, November 11, 2010

"Old Timey" style and quality throughout!

Fully and properly packed, it is comfortable for gettting through airports and up hotel stairs. If it is not packed taught, the closures will slip off the ends. I just slip them through the handles. Not as pretty, but it works.

The "Pack straps" on the bottom should be on top, The handle exposed can be used to throw a person down and pin them, my work mates found this humorus, but it could be used for evil in the wrong hands. No pun intended.

I questioned Red Oxx about wear from the hardware through the bottom panel, they said it would be replaced if it happened.

The size is great, even overstuffed it still meets the airline standards.

Great Bag with room for improvement
By saracen, VA, December 3, 2009

First of all, this bag is much larger than I expected (in a good way). The bag swallows everything you give it and more. The compression straps are great for when the bag is not completely full. The quality, use of material, and fit/finish are top notch and I couldn't ask for more. There are only two minor things I would like to see improved on. First, the shoulder straps have a metal release mechanism that only really works when there is quite a bit of load on the straps (ie bag is full and on your shoulders). If the hardware was moved up onto the shoulder pad more and the lower part of it somehow attached to the shoulder pad then this would solve the issue and the strap would easily be loosened up even when not completely full. Secondly, the straps are kept in the bottom of the bag underneath a somewhat false bottom. It's really a nice design except that when you wear the bag using the shoulder straps, the bottom of the bag is now on your back, which can get bit messy depending on conditions. Also, I noticed that after a couple of uses (check in with airlines) the hardware started to show a bit of wear through the bottom of the bag. The bottom as extremely tough nylon but you could still see the hardware pushing against it. I solved this (somewhat) by folding the shoulder strap over the hardware and then placing it in the false bottom. A bit more cumbersome but it works. I think all of this could be solved by putting the straps at the top of the bag and make them fully removable. Overall I'm extremely happy with the bag and will purchase from Red Oxx again.

 none better for the job
By deeleed, cincinnati, January 9, 2009

I purchased this bag specifically for a trip to Antarctica. It is great. I took this bag and one other for a 3 week trip. The other was carrying back all of the stuff I would acquire on the way there and back again. I traveled through three very different climates with plenty of clothing for each. This bag held it all, including some of the gear that I would need for camping and mountaineering in the Antarctica wilderness. Best investment I made in 2008.

 Awesome Bag
By Vinson A., Grand Junction, Co, June 19, 2008

WOW. I bought these to replace two Osprey 100 Spacestation's whose compression straps had broken trying to tighten up a load of clothing and gear. The Sherpa were a few Cubic Inches smaller so I was a little worried, but they actually were able to pack quite a bit more due to their design. As with all Redoxx bags, they are top quality in every sense. I wish the pictures could really demonstrate how heavy duty and well-constructed these bags are. JPEG's just don't do the bags justice!! I am extremely impressed. Also, the customer service (Amanda) was superb and is enough to keep me coming back for more. Thanks Redoxx!!!

 Mislabeled?
By Anonymous, , April 21, 2006

Fully two and 1/2 times the size of the Flying Boxcar, the Sherpa is hardly a 'Junior'. A magnificently built carryall that easily converts to a backback for long hauls, this cavernous bag went to Asia half empty and came back with plenty of room to spare, despite much collecting of artifacts. Since I didn't have enough gear to stuff it full, I added a thin plywood panel at the bottom to make it easier to handle. Without the panel, the bag was shapeless and drooped when carried by the shoulder strap. If you can't fill it, you'll probably be happier with a smaller bag.Red Oxx should make a 4,200 cu.in. version of this bag to fill the void between it and the Flying Boxcar.Great product, great customer service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sherpa carry-on legal?
Sure, if there's nothing packed in it. This bag is for checked travel only.

Where are the backpack straps located?
The retractable straps are located in a hidden zippered pocket on the bottom of the bag.

What are the D-Rings for?
To attach the backpack straps on their clip-on snap hook end.

Are there any internal pockets?
The Sherpa Jr. features only one large main compartment and two large exterior flat pockets.

How many days of travel will fit in the Sherpa?
This is an expedition sized bag. Going somewhere for awhile? This is your bag. Properly packed one could live out of a Sherpa Jr. for a few weeks.

What's the average weight when full?
Depends what you pack in it. A few weeks of hunting gear for example, could weigh up to a hundred pounds.

Does it come with a waist belt?
Since the Sherpa is a frameless soft sided bag, a waist belt would not work.

Why does the Sherpa have a storm flap over the zippers and your other bags don't?
The Sherpa was designed with rugged outdoor use in mind. A storm flap helps make the bag more water resistant.

How do the compression straps work?
They encompass the bag's exterior helping to keep your gear in place through, you guessed it, compression.

What's the difference between the Sherpa, PR6 and the Big Oxx?
The Sherpa is a large capacity (though not as large as the Big Oxx) outfitter's bag equipped with one main compartment as opposed to the PR6 which has a large center compartment and two end compartments.

Can the Sherpa be locked?
Yes, any TSA approved lock will work. Or you can use one of our inexpensive cable locks. Keep in mind, any soft sided bag can be cut open with a sharp knife.

Will a sleeping bag fit inside the Sherpa?
Absolutely, it will even fit a large Butler Sleeping Bag.

Are there any interior pockets?
The Sherpa Jr. has only one large main compartment and two exterior flat pockets.

Can you ship USPS?
Yes, Red Oxx will ship USPS upon request. Simply state, "Please ship USPS" in the cart comments during checkout and we will adjust your billing accordingly.
