After returning recently from an 18 day trip to the UK and South Africa, I have to say that this bag can handle it all. When searching for a bag large enough to accommodate 18 days worth of clothing while still maintaining today's carry-on size restrictions, the Flying Boxcar out-shined all others.
To give some perspective of what this bag is capable of carrying, I packed: 6 pair of shorts, 2 pair of jeans, 1 towel, 8 shirts( long and short sleeved), 17 pair of underwear, 8 pair of socks, 1 rain jacket, 1 pair of sweat pants, 1 pair of swim shorts, 1 toiletry kit, 6 power adapters (spares for the others in my party), 2 power units and cords for my phone and iPad, 1 set of earbuds, sunglasses, a ball cap and my iPad. Despite fitting all this, I still had room for souvenirs, an extra shirt, 2 hats, a sweat shirt, and jacket that I purchased while on the trip.
You can really tell that the Flying Boxcar was designed with durability in mind. They say that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and after my trip, I still cannot find a weak link in this bag's construction. Every part of the bag appears to be over designed in order to hold up in even the most demanding of conditions. With all of this extra strength, you might think it would be overly heavy, but it just isn't. On doing a comparison, an empty Boxcar is actually lighter than the leather duffel I upgraded from.
In all honesty, I did not find anything about the Flying Boxcar to be lacking. Some of the other reviewers disliked the passthrough pocket on the back as it is too wide to securely hold on most roll bag handles, but as I only had one bag, I found this pocket to work exceptionally well for holding documents. With locking zippers, I can't see where extra width would be an issue, but since I did not try it, I cannot comment on that specifically. I found that while the included non-slip strap worked well, I preferred to just slip my arms through the carry handles and wear it like a backpack. This did however become uncomfortable on the longer carry periods as the straps are quite narrow, but since this carry method is not what the Boxcar was designed for, it is again not a fault of the bag's design. I think in the future, I will get some foam tubing to slip over the straps when I need to carry it this way.
Overall, I would highly recommend this bag to anyone who is looking for a bag to last them a lifetime. As a pilot, I will be using this bag a lot over the coming years and since reliability is a must when maintaining a tight schedule, I am confident that the Flying Boxcar will not disappoint. Well done RedOxx team. Well done.

Used this on a multi week overland style camping trip through Colorado - one for each member of the family, all 5 color-coded. Also used on airplane during weekend trip to Vegas. Ridiculously durable, easy to organize stuff, plenty of room.

This bag is unbelievable as to how much it can hold. The zippers are well thought out on the double zip top. My only complaint is that it can hold more than I can lift! Best suitcase I've ever owned.

Looks like this product will last a long time and was great for cramming things in due to overweight excess baggage when flying .

Bought this bag to use as a large range bag. However, it does not have enough support on the bottom or sides for my purposes without folding in the middle. However, I do think the bag will easily hold the weight itself. I will need to modify it to suit my needs. Otherwise I think the bag is very well made, great zippers, etc., and will probably last a lifetime.

Flying Boxcar Review:
I spent a lot of time deliberating this purchase since, like many of us, I already owned some cheap duffels and gym bags that were doing the job well enough. However, my activity rotation changed and I wanted something more appropriate, and was tired of buying things to be replaced.
My primary usage is as a gear/gym bag, secondary as carry-on for flights. I need equipment for interval/crossfit style work-outs, MMA, and indoor/outdoor rock climbing, often without knowing which will be happening on a given day, so I need to carry a lot of stuff. Oddly shaped things and a lot of metal gear. As well, I wanted something that would hold up to the rigors of rocky terrain, and not appear too conspicuous in any environment (the MMA crowd and the rock climbers attract a noticeably distinct core). The Flying Boxcar looked to be Red Oxx’s most fitting offering.
I chose the ‘safari’ color scheme (which looks great in person, a mix of greens that compliment each other…someone should update the website photo, it does it no justice). Here are my thoughts after a couple weeks’ usage:
Craftsmanship: Superb, just handling the bag is a joy, as all the materials exude quality. I like the overbuilt approach, and while the metal hardware seemed a little too chrome and flashy at first, their heft immediately justifies it. I’d prefer black hardware, but the silver is a nice accent. The thick cordura feels great and I never worry about it snagging or tearing no matter where I throw it in the truck or what I drag it through. Big #10 zippers are a joy, although they can grab soft clothes pretty easily (hoodies, etc), and the self-locking nature is a bit dual-edged, for while they won’t slip, you also can’t easily position two pulls at once. I like them.
Handles/Carrying: Nicely designed and burly. The side handles get frequent use and are one of the big perks of the Boxcar design. Top handle feels fantastic once snapped, but something of a handful if you just want to grab it quickly (thick materials don’t bunch easily). As for the shoulder strap and ‘claw’, I have mixed feelings. It absolutely does as promised (to never slip), but it is SO grippy that it’s a hassle to reorient on your body. It will grab hair and scrunch up your clothes, so you need to be very deliberate with its placement (like laying down a decal). It cuts in a bit with heavy loads, but is overall comfortable once properly placed (especially across the body). For just picking up quickly and tossing on your shoulder, it’s great. Flexible, reversible, and stays put while you manage the rest of your load or deployment. For extended carries, I might swap it out, however.
Pockets/Interior: Pretty basic. The padded bottom enough cushion that I don’t feel the need to insert some structural foam (as I do with other bags), and helps keep the shape. The bag is *very* efficient with its space. I carry focus mitts, gloves, harnesses, climbing rack, weight belt, change of clothes, and still have plenty of space for other odds and ends. I bought a couple of the Nomad bags to keep things organized, and the work great within a crowded bag, with their big handles and resilient material. I’m also very happy with the two front pockets whose volume isn’t affected by the main compartment. Typically have my personal items in the small, and shoes or a couple large water bottles in the other.
Cons: The first isn’t really a knock of the Flying Boxcar, but even for all the stuff I carry, it’s still quiet big, and there’s nothing less satisfying than toting a half full bag. I’ll probably buy a Sunchaser to compliment my setup. I’d have some reservations with the ‘Claw’ strap for anyone with shoulder length hair or longer. Lastly, the only real issue is with the rear pass-through pocket. I don’t think I’d ever use it for that purpose, it’s flimsy and too large, AND unnecessary since the top handle bent back works fine and is much stronger. Plus it adds two more heavy zippers. I zip tied the bottom zipper, but I doubt I’ll even use it as a pocket much, since it doesn’t have it’s own volume.
Overall: Excellent bag. I really enjoy the feel and user experience, and expect I’ll use it for the rest of my life (or bequeath it someone that can). Breaking in its ‘newness’ is part of the fun, and it really speaks to all the adventures I want to be have. I’d probably dock a half-star for the weird back pocket and myopic design of the shoulder strap, but otherwise it comes fully recommended and I look forward to trying more Red Oxx products.

Bought the Flying Boxcar about 5 years ago. It's seen quite a few air miles as well as long distance car trips. This bad boy never fails to hold everything I need including a full 3/2 wetsuit, boots, hood, flip flops, clothes and my ipad, for a 9 day stay in Peru recently. And it all fit in the overhead compartment. No airline has ever questioned it's carry-on size.
There are some things in life that, if they break or get lost you might go looking for something better or maybe not even replace. But for me, this is one of those things that if it were lost tomorrow I'd be ordering another one immediately. My only regret is that I didn't find out about Red Oxx sooner.
P.S. I just purchased and received a new Sunchaser for weekend getaways. I chose the safari color and it looks even better in person than in the pictures here.

Loaded this puppy with 3 days of clothing, toiletries, a poncho liner, some misc gear and headed off for a 3 night trip off Baja California for some tuna fishing. Well this bag met my expectations, was easily transportable especially with the shoulder strap and we came home with over 200 lbs of tuna slabs. What more can I say!!

I got this bag because I other bag was finally worn down. This was able to fit everything I needed for the weekend. 2 changes of clothes, PJs, a fully loaded shave kit, a suit, and all my small electronics. The bag is bigger inside than it looks. The teeth on the zippers are huge and won't break or get caught like the small cheap zippers on other bags. This bag was stuffed into my trunk along with luggage for 4 other people. It was tossed around and abused and it came out in great shape. The build quality on this bag is great is great. And the two side pouches are great smaller items. I used the bigger on for the shave kit, and the smaller one for small misc items (cables, charger, playing cards, etc.)
After my experience with Red Oxx I won't go anywhere else for my travel luggage. As far as this bag is concerned, I would highly recommend it for the weekend (even week long) traveler.

I like this bag. Took it on my first trip for five days. It held all that I needed but must admit that it was a bit heavy to carry around the airport. I am a 60 year old woman and couldn't move as quickly as I used to through the terminal. Hope to take it on a trip to Mexico this year for two weeks. The bag is very well constructed and I have no worries about durability.

I really like this bag! It is very durable and has a nice rugged look. I love that it is made in the USA. One major plus about its construction is that there is very little space wasted with bag material. The bag is as big on the inside as it looks. Works as a carry on, and also is great for riding the Megabus!

I had originally purchased this product for myself but when on a trip in Germany to visit friends it was gifted away to a German buddy during a night of over enthusiastic beer consumption. So, several years and multiple positive reviews from my German buddy later finally decided needed to get another for myself and is as good as I recall after several road trips.

This is an awesome product !! I've had it about two months now. I travel five days s week for business, every week and it does a fantastic job for me.

I used this along with the small rucksack for a 16 day trip to Europe. Loved them both and didn't need to check any baggage!! These are good looking and sturdy pieces of luggage. I would (and have) recommend to anyone. Thanks Red Oxx

This bag is impressive. We bought two one for my wife and one for myself. We also bought two PR6's because we plan on taking a road trip this summer but we wanted something we could take as carry-ons if needed. Well the Flying Boxcars are great but are still fairly big. We are very pleased and may yet purchase a couple more bags just smaller.

I have the safari 4.5 myself and decided to buy the Boxcar for my wife. We were heading out on a 22 day driving trip towards the west coast and this bag swallowed everything she could throw its way. Awesome
By Kenn Martin, Perth, Australia, September 27, 2012
I needed an extra carryon to manage the swag I'd accumulated for my return to Perth so I ordered the Boxcar in addition to the PR5 and PR6 that I'd checked at Orlando. The gate attendant invited me to test it in the Qantas carryon contraption and while the dimensions were spot on, the weight was "excessive". My fault/not the bag's.They gate checked the Boxcar at the plane door and it arrived unscathed with the contents intact at Sydney with my other checked gear. I continue to be a happy customer.

I ordered the flying boxcar in anticipation of a flight to Hawaii with my 2 year old. It is a superb piece of work. It is roomy, durable, and as well and thoughtfully designed as all of their luggage. Useful side pockets, grab handles and slot for sliding over a roller bag should you be travelling with a philistine. I was able to pack all of the items we'll need for a week in it, including 20 diapers! I am also using the briefcase as a carry-on/diaperbag/multi media tote. Keep up the goood work Redoxx! I recommend you to all my travelling friends when they're looking for a bag!
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the Flying Boxcar and the PR5 Duffel Bag?
The Flying Boxcar Sports Duffel has a full length main compartment with extra raised pockets located on the side of the bag, whereas the PR5 has a shorter and smaller main compartment with pockets on both ends. The Flying Boxcar also features grab handles on the ends and a padded bottom reinforced with ballistic nylon, our toughest. Overall, the Boxcar will actually carry slightly more gear.
What's the difference between the Sun Chaser and the Flying Boxcar?
The Flying Boxcar is a full five inches longer and one inch wider.
Will this bag meet personal item sizing?
You can use it as one but we don't market it as such. So long as it wasn't fully packed you might be able to sneak one by.
Why is the bottom padded?
The padding was requested by photography enthusiasts to protect their camera gear from impacts.
Why are there two zippers on the back of the bag?
They are for a pass-through panel so that the bag can be mounted over the handles of a wheeled bag.
Is there a way to securely lock my bag?
Sure, you can use any TSA approved bag lock
or try our Cable Lock
for a simple, semi-secure solution. Watch this video where CEO Jim Markel demonstrates how you can use the cable that comes with the product Dog Tag

How many days worth of clothes will fit in the Flying Boxcar?
The Flying Boxcar was designed to easily hold a weekend's worth of your clothes, like for a beach trip... thus the product name.
Are there any interior pockets?
The Flying Boxcar has two raised side pockets and one flat side pocket. There is only the one large main compartment without interior pockets.
Is this the same bag as the Railroad Grip?
The Railroad Grip was designed by railroaders for railroaders and will fit the typical engineer's lamp, rulebook and so on. For the harsh environment of the railroad, the Grip is also a superior choice due to it's ballistic weighted heavy-duty fabric.
My zipper broke. The teeth have separated. Do I send it in for warranty repair?
No need for warranty repair, try to fix it yourself. Check out this video where CEO Jim Markel shows how easy it is to do it yourself.

HOW IS THIS DUFFEL BAG DIFFERENT?
The Expedition series duffel bags were redesigned to meet your unique sports and recreation oriented carry-on legal packing and traveling preferences. With the same exterior dimensions and capacity as the airline approved PR5 Safari Beano, the Flying Boxcar is a bottom padded sports bag that differs by featuring an extra-long central main compartment so you can carry your scuba fins, camera tripod or hyper zoom lens on the plane with you when you fly out for your safari holiday.
A LARGE PADDED STORAGE COMPARTMENT FOR YOUR BELONGINGS.
This main compartment features a Volara foam padded bottom, which allows the Flying Boxcar bag to maintain shape when you don't have it filled to the top (should you want to shop and return home with some souvenirs). And the extra peace of mind regarding protecting expensive and fragile bulky items you may pick up or take along on your adventure doesn't hurt. Secure your goods with the double zippered lid and steel twin turn locks.
You'll thank us a thousand times over for the grab loops on both ends while yanking the bag from an overhead bin, or pulling it easily in-and-out of a vehicle during an overlanding or roadtrip adventure. Ballistic nylon skid plate on the bottom gives years of worry-free use while sliding around loading docks, pickup beds or dirty car trunks.
JUST ROLL WITH IT.
Want to stack it on your wheeled bag? No problem, the back pass-through pocket docking sleeve lets you slip it over the handle bars on your wheeled bag (see additional photos tab) ... or just use it as an extra-long flat side pocket.
ORGANIZE YOUR BELONGINGS.
Twin raised side pockets keep necessities quickly accessible. Both raised pockets zip halfway down their sides for easy access to buried equipment like data storage, adapters, manuals, etc. Monkey Fist Zip Knots and heavy-duty #10 YKK Zippers make opening the compartments a yankin' cinch, yet the self-locking zipper design prevents accidental openings. The detachable and adjustable padded Claw Shoulder Strap allows for easy nonslip shoulder or cross body carrying-- or carry by hand with the nylon webbing handles.

5 REASONS TO OWN RED OXX GEAR
1. A SPORTS DUFFEL BUILT LIKE A TANK?
Our customers like to define our gear as "built like a tank". While obviously you're not going to be toting around bags that weigh 50 tons and have three inches of armor plate, still the comparison is valid. For a duffel bag, the Flying Boxcar's built tough. Starting with one of the most durable soft textile material available, 1000 weight CORDURA® Brand Nylon, we use super strong proprietary UV resistant thread that is double stitched into every seam. Rugged, reliable and tough.
2. BOUND AND BAGGED TO NEVER FRAY.
Places where two separate pieces of fabric are stitched together are then bound, that is, we take a long piece of one inch wide nylon webbing and fold it over the edges of the two pieces and stitch them together, this creates a strong seam, or binding, that prevents the pieces from unraveling on the inside of the duffel, or gives it a clean finished look on the outside of the Boxcar.
In addition, each exposed fabric edge, such as on a pocket flap, is also bound using a thicker binding material. Inside edges typically receive a thinner nylon webbing, whereas outside corner edges that are exposed to wear will have a thicker nylon binding. All of our binding material is vertically woven to prevent fraying, peeling or splitting that you may commonly see in competitors bags that brag of "binding" their edges.
3. STRESS POINT RIGGER CHECK.
Each stress point, such as where the handles attach to the bag, is double box stitched - which is where we get the "double xx" in our name, Red OXX; a stitching practice we adapted from our time as parachute riggers.
4. MY, WHAT BIG ZIPPERS YOU HAVE!
The reason Red Oxx uses the largest zipper available, the #10 YKK VISLON® zipper, is that they are easily repairable, even in the field; they will hold their place, that is, they "lock"; they are difficult to penetrate, thereby increasing the security of your belongings; they function smoothly in inclement weather and they can be yanked from a variety of angles without losing teeth or becoming separated.
5. PUTTING THE HARD IN HARDWARE.
Red Oxx has occasionally been accused of "overdoing" our hardware. But once you've had a cheap piece of plastic hardware break in the middle of a busy intersection, airport or other inconvenient locale dumping your precious belongings all over the ground, having a heavy-duty nickel-plated or stainless steel D ring or attachment swivel that weighs just a little more, or might make a little noise, is a travel companion's confidence builder and peace of mind maker. After all, you want to enjoy your journey as best you can. Why worry about having your Flying Boxcar Sports Duffel break down?
The Red Oxx Flying Boxcar Sports Duffel pushes maximum legal carry-on size restrictions yet still offers generous flexibility and ease of use. Just so you know, if you over-stuff your Boxcar it won't be carry-on legal.

Flying Boxcar trivia: the Flying Boxcar was named after the post-WW II transport aircraft, the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar. The distinctive design of the Flying Boxcar featured a fuselage that was separate from the engines and the dual tail ailerons located on the wings, leaving the area behind the cockpit to accommodate larger loads. The design allowed more powerful engines and a cargo area uncluttered by landing gear and control cables.
