Red Oxx Woodcut Trivia
Woodcuts were a popular way to make a printed image up until the invention of the photographic image. Used in mass production printing, woodcuts were a quick and easy way to create a printed two dimensional print in color or black and white. To start the process, a sheet of wood is shaved flat and sanded smooth. A drawing is rendered on the sheet of wood in pencil. Special woodcutting tools are then used to cut out the negative parts of the image where no ink will rest.
Usually an ink roller is then rolled across the image placing the ink on the raised surface. The artist will then pull a sheet of paper, carefully places it over the image and then presses down flat on the paper. The paper is peeled off and set aside to dry. The image can be re-inked and reprinted a number of times, sometimes with different colors.
