SLR Camera bag in hiding!

Sure! Carry-on for a short trip to Caribbean? Why not?

The smallest in our Expedition series of bags, the Sun Chaser is the latest in incognito camera bags. The main compartment is roomy for all your photo gadgets like SLR zoom lenses, camera bodies, and short tripods. The closed cell Volara foam padded bottom helps to protect your precious fragile photo gear from impact. Secure the double zippered lid with the twin turn locks. The two raised side pockets are handy for when you need fast access. Both pockets zip halfway down the sides for easy access to buried equipment like data storage, adapters, manuals, etc.

MORE THAN JUST A CAMERA BAG
The Sun Chaser (like all of our Red Oxx bags) is multipurpose – use it for car travel, last-minute getaways, or quick vacations where you only need to pack your bathing suit, a few changes of underwear, a few different outfits, and your shoes. It also makes for a handy gear bag.

A GOOD BAG IS A SUM OF ITS PARTS
Our Monkey Fist Zip Knots and heavy-duty #10 YKK zippers make opening the compartments a yankin' cinch, yet the self-locking zipper design prevents accidental openings. The full-length pass-through zippered pocket on the other side allows for stacking on wheeled suitcase handles... or leave the bottom zipper closed and use it as a flat pocket.

HOW TO CARRY THE BAG
The nonslip Claw Shoulder Strap allows for easy carrying, while the grab loops on both ends make retrieving this bag from the overhead compartment or yanking it from under other soft-sided luggage a snap. Carry it using the Claw on your shoulder or with the handle.

Heavy-duty 1050 weight Ballistic Nylon, our strongest, on the bottom skid plate signals many years of rough use sliding up and down cargo belts. Sun Chaser is a multi-compartment, multitask, carry-on duffel bag with a minimalist's design and organizational flexibility.

Dimensions: 19"L x 9"W x 9"H.

 Sun Chaser
By Chris , Chattanooga, February 21, 2013

Awesome bag! I travel a lot for work and have tried at least 15 or 20 different bags over the past 10 years. I have definitely found a 'keeper' with the SunChaser.

I fly a lot of CRJ's and I can load this bag up with 3 or 4 days of clothes and still fit it easily in the small overhead. This bag is built like a tank and I'm certain it will give me many years of good service.

My first Red Oxx bag, but not my last...perfect carry on size for camera gear and some basic necessities...

 Second Time Around
By Paul Haynie, Waukegan, IL, September 20, 2012

I am now on my second Sun Chaser. The first lasted a year and a half, and showed zero signs of wear after daily use and much kicking around. I would still have it, but the thief had other ideas.

 Fantastic Bag
By Dex, San Francisco, June 23, 2012

For a number of years, I have been lugging around a much larger duffel bag for weekend trips, and always found myself packing and lugging around way too much gear. The standard round duffel bag might look roomy (they aren't) and with the single top zipper you can never really see all your gear anyway.

Was initially attracted to the SunChaser because of the way the top opening is designed, which gives you a quick view of all your gear plus makes packing a breeze. And the bag is square, so theoretically will take more gear than a larger round duffel. Couldn't decide between the SunChaser and the Safari Beanos PR4, finally went with the SunChaser because of the slightly larger main compartment and padded bottom, even though it had fewer outside pockets.

Glad I went with the SunChaser. The large, 19 x 9 inch main compartment allows me to pack at least a weekend's worth of gear, with room left over for an iPad, book and other diversions. Side pockets fit cell phone, flask (or two), playing cards/dice, and the large pocket will even fit an iPad if need be.

One of the things I most love about the bag is that the Eagle Creek packing cubes that I use to pack underwear, socks, and tees fith the Sunchaser PERFECTLY. I can toss in tow medium and two large packing cubes, toss a third medium in the large side pocket, and I still have enough room for toiletries, shoes, and a sweater or sweatshirt. I can easily pack three days worth of clothing and gear in the cubes, and it all arrives at my destination neat and wrinkle free.

I think this is the perfect bag for trips of two to three days duration. I'm ordering a Flying Boxcar for longer trips, as I think the SunChaser might be a tad small for week-long trips.

Now if Red Oxx only made packing cubes to fite their bags . . . (hint hint)

 A camera bag and more
By Farron Brougher, Orange County, CA, June 14, 2012

I "converted" to Red Oxx when the tour operator strongly suggested that I not check bags to Tanzania. The first two bags have since been to Europe and South America.

The Sun Chaster fits under the seat of the smaller regional jets and still serves as my bag for essentials that I'd never check. Camera, flash, chargers and accessories, a netbook or iPad, reporter's notebook, etc. The larger front pocket holds a Kindle Fire in a case. The smaller pocket is for a transoceanic supply of cleaners for glasses and screen.

My only suggestion is to find a way to add a water bottle carrier that is taller than the one on the Gator bag. I've had countless 1/2 liter bottles fall out of that one.

 Grad Gift Idea
By Paul Walker, where ever the winds and my will takes me!, May 31, 2012

This is about my 8th Sun Chaser purchase - Each member of my family has one and I've bought 4 as graduation gifts. Everybody loves em for airline carry on's or for quick overnight get aways! I actually keep 1 on hand for that I need a great gift now event. You can cram em full of stuff or gear and they just carry on as if that's what they were designed to do - funny because I figure that's what the Ox boys had in mind when they manufacture all their gear. I've bought a briefcase, a gator, a PR 5 and suit bag - All of it the best bags I've ever owned. They've travelled to Africa, Europe, Mexico and South America and they are solid travel luggage. I even own an early bag from Red Ox that they no longer make but is my favorite small gear catchall/go bag. Keep up the great work Red Oxx and best wishes for the new facility!

 Great Bag
By Scott, Danville, CA, April 30, 2012

I got this for carry-on and love it. It's very well made and the double zipper top is great for access. My 8x42 binos fit well in their case in the outside pocket and using the rolling method of packing it will hold plenty of clothes. Not too big and not too small -- Just right. Another "well done" to Red Oxx.

 Fantastic little carry-on
By Mike S., Denver, CO, April 26, 2012

This Sun Chaser is a fantastic little bag. I keep it as my go bag for any of the quick trips I must take for work with little to no notice. It holds a full compliment of 3+ days of clothing (mixed business casual and personal casual), change of shoes and sandals, toiletries, water bottle and still has room to spare. Even fully loaded it easily fits in the overhead and has not even been considered at the gates as an item needed to be gate checked.

Solid , sturdy bag, superior workmanship, simply a high quality bag well worth the investment.

 great carry on
By Anonymous, woburn, ma, April 5, 2012

i travel a lot between the east coast and the midwest on weekend trips. I wanted something that would fit underneath my seat on the plane. This bag works perfect. I can put plenty of clothes in it and lay my laptop on top of them without any issues for space. No more having to check my roller because all the space above has been used up on the plane. The only issue I have, similar to others, is the strap begins to dig in to my shoulder after carrying it for a while. I either switch shoulders, carry it by the handles, or put it down. The build quality is fantastic. So glad I finally found the nearly perfect carryon bag.

 Perfect
By RP, Seattle, March 1, 2012

This bag is perfect. As a high school coach I've got through 20 different bags- all junk (including under armour stuff). This bag is the perfect size, looks classy, and is bullet proof. Why spend $500 on 20-30 different bags over time, when a little extra money for one bag is the solution....wish someone would have told me that before.

Also went on a three day trip, and took only this bag and avoided check in. Once again- fit in the small overhead bin of the plane and big enough to carry all I needed for the weekend trip.

 Another Great Product
By David Lisak, Massachusetts, September 8, 2011

I own many Red Oxx bags, so I am no longer surprised by the excellent design features and superb construction. That's what defines this company. The Sun Chaser fits a very particular niche for me. I am a very frequent flyer, and I pack very light. So this bag, at roughly the same volume as the Mini-Ruck (1850+ cu. in.), is easily large enough to carry what I need for multi-day trips. The Sun Chaser has two features that -- for some trips -- make it more convenient than the Mini-Ruck. First, the double-zipper top opening makes it easier to pack and easier to see what you've got in the bag. Second, the shape of the Sun Chaser makes it easier to fit into the small, overhead bins of commuter jets, which all airlines are using now on more and more routes. The Mini-Ruck will also fit those bins, but if you've got it packed full you might need to do some shifting around to get it in and out.

Of course, packed full, I'd rather be carrying the Mini-Ruck on my back than the Sun Chaser over my shoulder, but that's why I own both bags.

 Solid bag
By Anonymous, Virginia, September 5, 2011

Used this as my primary bag for a brief 3 day European jaunt. Very easy to pack given the large top flap. I took extra shoes and even packed my suit jacket easily, without much wrinkling. The little pockets are perfect for toiletries.

 Great little bag
By Robert, Great Falls, VA, August 21, 2011

Truly under-rated and under-appreciated little bag. I substitute it for my Air Boss on some trips. I can get a week's worth of stuff in this bag, even with Lufthansa's absurd 8kg (17.2 lb) carry-on limit. Works just as well for a quick weekend trip to the beach, or the mountains.

Side pockets are good for miscellaneous stuff. Use some Domke inserts and it's a pretty good camera bag, with room for some extras.

 Not just a camera bag
By Farron Brougher, Orange County, CA, July 28, 2011

I no longer carry a camera bag, since I travel light with at most two cameras and lenses, maybe a small flash. The Sun Chaser is the ideal under-seat bag. The side pockets add space without adding height, the critical dimension for bags that go under the seat. As another reviewer noted, a not quite full bag was easy on the shoulder at about 13 lbs. I too chose it over the PR4, a bit less expensive and easier to pack.

 WOW!
By JackieB, SW FLORIDA, July 21, 2011

At 62 years old and 5'2" I decided to forget trying to lug around a roll aboard bag that I could never get up stairs and constantly tipped over, and try a one bag carryon that I could just, well, carry! So after many days of investigating hundreds of options including other American bag companies and reading all the reviews I could find on them all, I decided that the Red Oxx Sunchaser was THE bag! So after ordering the bag and promptly receiving it, I was at first afraid it was too small for a one bag trip. But, I packed the bag, anyway, for a ten day trip, hoping for the best.

WOW!! I fit EVERYTHING I needed into the bag (I don't even carry a purse) for the ten days and I still could have fit a little more and it only weighed 13 pounds! I am now back from my trip and using the Sunchaser was the very best experience I ever had traveling with a bag! Wish I would have had this bag years ago!!!! Thanks for this great product!!!

 Graduation Gift!
By Paul Walker, Texas, June 23, 2011

I've been giving Sun Chasers for graduation gifts for a few years now and it has worked out great. It's a great piece of equipment and as people move to a different phase of their life, a great bag for travel and weekends is always appreciated. I usually try to get them is school colors if possible but regardless, the recipients are always thrilled! Great products RED OXX keep em coming!

The Sun Chaser: Great Bag for Short Trips (Even to the Hospital!)
By Ryan F., Cuyahoga Falls, OH, June 15, 2011

This was my first Red Oxx purchase and I know it won't be my last. I almost purchased the Air Boss in May 2010 for a 10-day trip to China. But I purchased the MEI Executive Overnighter because it was a better fit for my needs.

I travel about 40% of the time for work and I've really enjoyed the "one-bag" concept, though I don't really stick to it. I always carry my laptop bag as well. I bought the Sun Chaser as a bag for shorter trips of 2 - 3 days, although this bag would work for longer trips too. The bag is built like a tank. It may even be overbuilt for a bag this small, but I understand how all Red Oxx products must have the same build quality.

I debated between this and the PR4. Since their physical sizes are the same, I chose the Sun Chaser for its superior function. It has a longer main compartment, which is easier to pack. The side pockets are more practical for me and the larger one holds toiletries perfectly for TSA.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. I haven't actually traveled with this bag for work yet because my wife just gave birth to our son. I received the bag about three days before we had to unexpectedly go to the hospital. Luckily I had already swapped her designer bag with the Red Oxx to take all of our overnight clothes and other things for the hospital stay. The Sun Chaser performed really well and held more than her larger bag.

One complaint I have is with the carrying strap. I know this thing is never supposed to slip from your shoulder, but this comes with a price. When the bag is fully loaded, the strap digs into your shoulder and it is quite uncomfortable. I have a Tom Bihn Absolute Strap on my MEI bag that I will just use when I take the Sun Chaser. Red Oxx really should look into an alternative strap for those that need more comfort when walking long distances.

Great product from Red Oxx though. I hope to buy more of their gear when the need arises.

 Terrific, as usual
By Pierre, Washington, DC, June 2, 2011

Great, as all RedOxx products are. And very reasonably priced.

 Very good bag - Solid
By Paul B., Vermont, May 8, 2011

Really great bag - just the right size for 3-4 day trips. Like others, I thought the Sunchaser might be too small when I first opened the box, but it holds a surprising amount of gear, and the outside pockets are really convenient. I do agree with others however, who commented that the hardware is a little overkill for this size bag. Maybe you could offer an alternative "ultra-light" model with similar features but these pared down features:

Lighter-weight hardware - titanium or aluminum rings, etc.

Alternative lightweight strap - Claw strap is great, but very heavy

Side stiffener to ease loading - this would really help packing

Center partition to divide main compartment

All in all a solid bag. Well laid out. I am very pleased with this purchase. Nice to find such high quality construction in a carryon.

 Perfect Carry On
By CB, Clearwater Valley, ID, January 7, 2011

I used this for a trip to San Diego, that involved smaller commuter planes. It fit perfectly under the seats even on the smaller planes. I carried a pro SLR with a good size lens and a telephoto zoom lens. Still had room for 2 changes of clothing, and a travel CPAP machine.

The construction of this bag actually shocked me with its quality. It is incredibly well-built, and the outside pockets are well designed. The zippers are so far above the usual quality! The claw strap was so much better than anything else I've carried that I ordered an extra strap to put on a piece of luggage I already had.

We liked this so much, we bought 3 more bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the Sun Chaser and PR4/5?
The Sun Chaser has a full length main compartment with extra raised pockets located on the side of the bag, whereas the PR4/5 have a shorter main compartment and the pockets on both ends. The Sun Chaser also features grab handles on the ends and a padded bottom.

What's the difference between the Sun Chaser and the Flying Boxcar?
The Flying Boxcar is a full five inches longer and one inch wider.

Will this bag meet personal item sizing?
You can use it as one but we don't market it as such. So long as it wasn't fully packed you could slip one by.

Why is the Sun Chaser less expensive than the PR4?
It takes less time time to build the bag.

Why is the bottom padded?
The padding was requested by photography enthusiasts to protect their camera gear from impacts.

Why are there two zippers on the back of the bag?
They are for a pass-through panel so that the bag can be mounted over the handles of a wheeled bag.

Can you lock the Sun Chaser?
Yes, any TSA approved lock will work. Or you can use one of our inexpensive Cable Locks. Keep in mind, any soft sided bag can be cut open with a sharp knife. Better to carry the bag onto the plane and store in the overhead bin where you can keep an eye on it.

What's the best way to pack the Sun Chaser?
We recommend the bundle packing method. Watch the packing video under the Photos and Videos tab on the Flying Boxcar product page (a slightly larger similar designed bag).

How many days worth of clothes will fit in the Sun Chaser?
The Sun Chaser was designed to hold a weekend's worth of clothes, like for a beach trip... thus the name.

Are there any interior pockets?
The Sun Chaser two raised side pockets and one flat side pocket.

There is only the one large main compartment without interior pockets.

Can you ship USPS?
Yes, Red Oxx will ship USPS upon request. Simply state, "Please ship USPS in the cart comments and we will adjust your billing accordingly.
